History of Liga Portugal
Liga Portugal – traditionally known as the Primeira Liga – was created in 1934, with the first national league season played in 1934-35. FC Porto were the very first champions. Before then, there was no unified national league in Portugal; the champion was decided through the knockout Campeonato de Portugal, which survives today as the Taça de Portugal. The creation of the league marked the beginning of a new era for Portuguese soccer, and the competition has been known as Liga Portugal in its modern, sponsored form for the last several seasons.
Portuguese soccer is defined by its "big three." In more than 90 years, only five clubs have ever been crowned champions – and every single one of them has come from either Lisbon or Porto. Benfica are the record champions with 38 titles, followed by Porto with 31 and Sporting CP with 21. The only other clubs ever to win the league are Belenenses (1945-46) and Boavista (2000-01). That dominance is unmatched in Europe's major leagues.
