Stadium information
Name:
Soldier Field
Capacity:
61,500
Address:
1410 Special Olympics Dr, Chicago, IL 60605, United States
Description:
Soldier Field is one of the most recognizable stadiums in the United States. It opened in 1924 as a monument to fallen soldiers, on the shores of Lake Michigan near downtown Chicago. After more than a decade playing in Bridgeview, the Fire moved back to Soldier Field, drawing strong crowds at every game, topping 60,000 fans for the biggest matchups. However, the stadium's layout changes depending on the demand for each game.
The best way to get to Soldier Field
Once you have your tickets for a Chicago Fire game, you'll need to figure out how to get to the stadium. Here are a few options to help you decide which one works best for you.
By subway and train
Roosevelt station, served by the CTA's Red, Orange, and Green Lines, is about a 15-minute walk from the stadium. From there, tuk-tuk services will take you right to the stadium gates. Metra trains to the downtown stations also drop you a short distance from Museum Campus.
By car
Soldier Field has parking lots in Museum Campus, which operate on an advance online reservation basis. Although prices are steep on big game days, it's a convenient option if you're coming from outside the city, though it's worth leaving early to allow for traffic on Lake Shore Drive.
By bike
The Lakefront Trail runs right alongside the stadium and follows the entire shoreline of Lake Michigan, making biking there a very affordable option.
Soldier Field guide
Soldier Field is the largest-capacity stadium hosting an MLS team, and that scale means the experience varies quite a bit depending on the area you choose. The stadium is divided into four areas: the West and East sides, and the North and South end zones.
West side
The West Side is the stadium's main stand. It's the stand located behind the benches. This is where the press box and some of the suites are found. Being the side with the most seats, it's the area with the best view of the field and the most comfortable seats in the entire venue.
East side
This is the other side, so it offers practically the same view but at a more affordable price. From its upper level you can see the Chicago skyline above the stadium, one of the best postcard views in American soccer. The suites and the club section, a premium area, are also located on this side.
South end
This is the usual home of the fan groups, gathered together as Section 8 Chicago, one of the oldest organized fan movements in the country. It's the loudest spot in the stadium, with singing and drumming for almost the entire game, and one of the most affordable areas. If you don't mind standing for almost the whole game, it's a great way to enjoy the experience.
North end
This is the opposite end, with a much calmer, more family-friendly vibe, making it a good choice for anyone looking for an affordable ticket without giving up being close to the field.
Which area should you choose?
To help you make the best decision based on your preferences, we put together this handy comparison table so you can choose the area that best fits what you're looking for and make the most of your experience.
| Priority | Best area | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Best atmosphere | South end | The stand where Section 8 Chicago is based, making it the loudest area in the stadium |
| Best visibility | Sides | Both the East and West sides offer a better view of the whole field. Both have very comfortable areas |
| First visit | Sides | Both offer a good balance between price and visibility. From the upper level, in the area near the south end, you can see the city skyline |
| Tight budget | End zones | Both sections behind the goals have the most affordable tickets, especially in the highest level |
| Maximum comfort and exclusivity | East side | This is where the climate-controlled indoor clubs are located, with the best amenities in the stadium |

Other information
Chicago Fire was founded on October 8, 1997, on the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. That's where the club's name comes from, along with much of its visual identity, as the current crest features a Florian Cross, a historic symbol of firefighters, alongside a six-pointed star taken from the flag of the city of Chicago. In 1998, their debut season, they couldn't have gotten off to a better start, winning the league and the US Open Cup in the same year.
Having moved back to Soldier Field to be at the heart of Chicago, the next step in the project is a stadium of their own in the new district of The 78, on the riverfront, with which the club is looking to recapture the standing it had in its early years.

Rivalries
Main rival
The Midwest tug-of-war vs. Columbus Crew
The matchup against Columbus Crew is the most frequently played and the most heated in the club's history, having met several times in playoff knockout games and cup finals along the way. These are the two clubs that defined MLS's early years, and their fan bases have spent more than two decades traveling in large numbers in both directions, which has not only fueled the rivalry but also creates an atmosphere hours before kickoff.
Minor rivalry
Brimstone Cup vs. FC Dallas
The Brimstone Cup is the trophy contested each season between Chicago Fire and FC Dallas since 2001. This rivalry grew out of the constant clashes between the two clubs in MLS's early years, making it one of the oldest in the league.
