The Estádio José Alvalade is the home of Sporting CP and has been since 2003. It is named after José Alvalade, the founder and first member of the club. The stadium is the center of the Alvalade XXI complex, designed by Portuguese architect Tomás Taveira, and was built at a cost of €184 million. It was constructed to host games at UEFA Euro 2004 and staged five games at that tournament, including the semifinal in which Portugal beat the Netherlands 2–1. The official opening took place on August 6, 2003, when Sporting beat Manchester United 3–1 in a friendly that was Cristiano Ronaldo's final appearance for the club. The ground hosted the 2005 UEFA Cup final and is a UEFA five-star stadium. After the removal of the moat ahead of the 2025–26 season, capacity increased to 52,095. The Segunda Circular, a major ring road of Lisbon, runs close to the stadium and can be reached via the Estádio de Alvalade exit. Sporting Clube de Portugal was founded on July 1, 1906, in Lisbon. The club is one of Portugal's "Big Three" alongside Benfica and Porto, and it has never been relegated from the top flight. Sporting is nicknamed "os Leões" (the Lions) and plays in green and white, which is why the club is also known as "os Verde e Brancos".
