I had heard about this site but never used it. The Estádio da Luz, officially the Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica, is the home of SL Benfica and has been since 2003. It replaced the old Estádio da Luz, which once held 120,000 people. The new ground opened on October 25, 2003 with a game against Uruguayan side Nacional. It was designed by HOK Sport, now Populous, and built at a cost of €160 million for UEFA Euro 2004. The stadium hosted the Euro 2004 final, where Portugal lost 1–0 to Greece, as well as the 2014 and 2020 UEFA Champions League finals. The polycarbonate roof sits on four big steel arches and lets the sunlight in. The fans call it "A Catedral", the Cathedral. By Metro
The metro is the easiest way to reach the Estádio da Luz. The stadium sits between two stations on the Blue Line (Linha Azul). Colégio Militar/Luz is the closest one, right next to the ground. Alto dos Moinhos is on the other side and just a short walk away. The Blue Line runs across Lisbon, so you can reach the stadium from the city center with no changes. Follow the fans off the metro and you won't get lost.
By Bus
Several Carris bus routes stop near the Estádio da Luz, around Colégio Militar and the Colombo shopping center next door. The metro is the faster option on game day, but the buses cover much of the city and link up with the metro stations close to the ground.
By Car
The Segunda Circular, a major ring road of Lisbon, runs close to the stadium. The Centro Comercial Colombo, right next to the ground, has a big parking lot you can use. Space fills up fast on game day, so the club recommends public transportation.

Sport Lisboa e Benfica was founded on February 28, 1904 in Lisbon. The club is one of Portugal's "Big Three" alongside Porto and Sporting CP, and has never been relegated from the top flight. Benfica is nicknamed "As Águias" (the Eagles) and "os Encarnados" (the Reds), and a real eagle named Vitória flies around the stadium before home games. Benfica holds the Guinness world record for the most paid-up members of a soccer club, with well over 300,000. Long-time captain Nicolás Otamendi left the club at the end of the 2025–26 season, with José Mourinho also departing and Marco Silva taking over as head coach for the 2026-2027 season.
American influences
Benfica is Portuguese-owned and run, but it has real ties to the United States.
