Stadium information
Name:
Estádio de São Miguel
Capacity:
12,500
Address:
Estádio de São Miguel, Ponta Delgada, São Miguel Island, Azores, Portugal
Description:
The Estádio de São Miguel is the home of CD Santa Clara and sits in Ponta Delgada, the biggest city in the Azores. It opened on April 18, 1976. The first official game was a friendly between Sporting and Benfica, which Sporting won 4–3. The ground is owned by the Regional Government of the Azores, and Santa Clara has played here since 1976. It is an open-air stadium that holds around 12,500 people. The record crowd was 15,000, for a Portugal versus Mozambique friendly in 1998. The Portugal national team has played here twice. The stadium was renovated in 2009 and 2014, with new lighting, new seating and new turf. In June 2025 UEFA gave the ground Category 3 status, which let Santa Clara play its Conference League qualifiers at home. Some of those fans can book their CD Santa Clara tickets through our secure booking system.
Best way to travel to Estádio de São Miguel
Once you've booked your CD Santa Clara tickets, it's time to figure out how to get to the stadium. Santa Clara plays on São Miguel island in the middle of the Atlantic, so most visitors fly in. Here are the options you can use to reach the stadium.
By Plane
Let's be honest, almost every away fan flies in. The Azores are out in the Atlantic, so there is no other way to get there. João Paulo II Airport in Ponta Delgada is the main airport of the islands. It sits just a few kilometers from the city center and the stadium. From the airport it's a short taxi or bus ride to the ground. Most visitors fly in, get a hotel in Ponta Delgada and make the short trip to the stadium from there.
By Bus
Local buses run around Ponta Delgada and stop near the stadium. The buses are cheap and they cover the city. On game day it's an easy way to reach the ground without a car. Follow the fans and you won't get lost.
By Car
If you rent a car on the island, the roads around Ponta Delgada are simple and the city is small. There is parking near the stadium, but space fills up fast on game day. Plenty of visitors rent a car anyway, because it's the easiest way to see the rest of São Miguel while you're there.
By Foot
Ponta Delgada is a compact city. If your hotel is in the center, walking to the Estádio de São Miguel is easier than you think. It's a short walk, it's free and you avoid the game-day traffic. Just follow the crowd heading to the ground.
Estádio de São Miguel guide
The Estádio de São Miguel is the only top-flight ground in the Azores. It holds 12,500 fans, and the seats fill up for the big games. That's where we come in — we've got you covered with tickets for every single CD Santa Clara game. To keep things simple we split it into four sections: the South Stand, the North Stand, the East Stand and the West Stand.
South Stand
The South Stand is home to CD Santa Clara's most vocal fans. This is where the loudest islanders sit. It is the end behind one of the goals. The South Stand is known for the loudest atmosphere in the stadium. If you want to experience real Azorean soccer, look for South Stand tickets. Whenever Santa Clara play toward this goal, you'll get that authentic CD Santa Clara feeling.
North Stand
On the opposite side of the South Stand you'll find the North Stand. This stand is behind the other goal. This is also where the away fans sit, in a corner of the North Stand. So if you're following your team to the Azores, this is the place to look for. Don't forget to select the "away end" or away section when booking. The rest of the North Stand holds home fans. Especially during the big games, you'll feel the tension and rivalry in the North Stand.
East Stand
Along the side of the field you'll find the East Stand. This stand offers good sightlines across the whole field. The stand runs along the full length of the field. You get a clear view of the game from the side. The East Stand is a good pick for your first Santa Clara game. It's a bit more about the view and a bit less about the noise. But you know for sure you'll see everything.
West Stand
It's no surprise that this stand sits on the opposite side from the East Stand. The West Stand is the main stand. It is located on the side of the dugouts, which gives you a little something extra: you can hear the managers shouting and watch the players warm up from up close. This stand also holds the hospitality area and the best seats in the house, so it's a bit more about the comfort and a bit less about the noise. But you know for sure you'll have a great view.
Which stand should you choose?
It's important to make the best decision when booking your CD Santa Clara tickets. That's why we've created this table with a quick comparison of all four stands. Check what matters to you and you'll find the best stand for your needs.
| Priority | Best Stand | Why |

13th in the Primeira Liga
Other information
Clube Desportivo Santa Clara was founded in 1921 in Ponta Delgada, on the island of São Miguel in the Azores. It is the most successful soccer club from the Azores and the only club from the islands to play in the Portuguese top flight, which makes it the westernmost top-flight club in Europe. Santa Clara is nicknamed "Os Açorianos" (the Azoreans). The club reached the Primeira Liga for the first time in 1999. After a club-record 5th place in 2024–25 it qualified for European soccer for the first time, playing the 2025–26 UEFA Conference League. Vasco Matos was let go in January 2026, and Petit took over as head coach in February 2026, keeping the club in the top flight.
American influences
Santa Clara has no United States owners; the club is controlled by Brazilian businessman Bruno Vicintin, who holds a majority stake, and the squad is built around a Brazilian and Portuguese core with no US players. The real American connection is the fan base. The Azores have sent generations of emigrants to the United States, and the largest Azorean-American communities are in New England — especially Massachusetts and Rhode Island, where Fall River has one of the densest Portuguese populations in the country — and in California. For those fans, Santa Clara is the hometown club, and now that it is in the Primeira Liga and playing in Europe, they can follow it from the US. GOLTV holds the American rights to Liga Portugal and carries games through streaming services such as Fanatiz and Fubo. That access matters most to the Azorean diaspora, which keeps a close eye on the only top-flight club from the islands.

Rivalries
Main Rivals
Azores derby against Operário
Santa Clara's main local rival is CD Operário, from Lagoa on the same island of São Miguel. This is the Azores derby. The two clubs come from the same island, so the game means a lot to the locals. The clubs have often been in different divisions, which has cooled the fixture, but it still carries history for older fans on the island.
The islands rivalry against Madeira
Santa Clara also has a rivalry with the clubs from Madeira, CS Marítimo and Nacional. Both archipelagos are out in the Atlantic, far from the mainland, so the islands like to measure themselves against each other. When the Azores meet Madeira it's more than just three points for the fans.
Minor Rivalries
The mainland giants
Like every smaller Portuguese club, Santa Clara always looks forward to the visits of the "Big Three". Games against Porto, Benfica and Sporting CP are the biggest of the season at the Estádio de São Miguel. The islanders love an upset, and the ground is always packed when one of the giants flies in.
