The Estádio Cidade de Barcelos is the home of Gil Vicente FC and has been since 2004. It is owned by the Municipality of Barcelos. The ground was built for around €22 million and opened on May 30, 2004 with a friendly against Uruguayan side Club Nacional de Football, which Gil Vicente FC lost 2–1. It replaced the old Estádio Adelino Ribeiro Novo, which had been the club's home for roughly 70 years. The stadium sits in the parish of Vila Boa, north of the city center. It holds 12,046 people and is a UEFA Category 3 ground, so European and international games can be played there. The record attendance is 12,500, set on October 31, 2004 for a 1–1 draw with SL Benfica. Portugal played one full international here, a 4–1 win over Canada in March 2005, and the ground hosted two games at the 2006 UEFA European Under-21 Championship. Gil Vicente Futebol Clube was founded on May 3, 1924 in Barcelos, in the north of Portugal. The club is named after the Portuguese playwright Gil Vicente, because the founders used to gather near the city's theater that carries his name. The club is nicknamed "os Galos" (the Roosters) and the fans are known as "Gilistas".
