Willem II was founded in 1896 in the city of Tilburg, originally as Tilburgia before being renamed after King William II two years later, making it one of the oldest soccer clubs in the Netherlands. Known affectionately as "de Tricolores" by their supporters, the club has spent much of its history alternating between the Eredivisie and Eerste Divisie, but has built a loyal following in Tilburg that has stuck with the club through both good times and difficult ones.
