The Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino sits in the Santa Rita district, in the south-central part of Turin, close to the historic Stadio Filadelfia, the true birthplace of the club. Originally designed for around 65,000 spectators, the stadium was thoroughly renovated and reduced in size for the 2006 Winter Olympics, with the aim of creating a more modern and compact football experience. Since April 2016 it has carried the name "Grande Torino" in tribute to the legendary 1940s side. The name Curva Maratona comes from the free-standing marathon tower outside the stadium, originally used for athletics events. Club History
Torino FC was founded in 1906 from the merger of FC Torinese with a group of breakaway Juventus members, and has carried the maroon colour that gave the club its nickname, "I Granata", ever since. Not only its founding year makes Torino one of the oldest clubs in Italy, also its seven Scudetti underline the club's historic importance. Six of those titles, 1942-43, 1945-46, 1946-47, 1947-48 and 1948-49, belong to the era of the legendary "Grande Torino" side led by captain Valentino Mazzola, after the first Scudetto had already been celebrated in 1927-28. The seventh and, to this day, most recent title came in 1975-76. Also this piece of football history still shapes the club's identity today.
No chapter in the club's history weighs heavier than 4 May 1949. On that day, the Fiat G.212 aircraft carrying the entire Grande Torino squad home from a friendly in Lisbon crashed, in thick fog, into the Basilica of Superga, in the hills above Turin. All 31 people on board, including the full starting eleven led by captain Valentino Mazzola, died. The club, which had just won five consecutive championships, had to play out the rest of the season with its youth team. To this day, Superga is the club's central place of remembrance, and every year on 4 May, fans make a pilgrimage to the basilica to honour the memory of the team. Also outside Turin, this disaster is regarded as one of the greatest tragedies in European football history.
The 2025-26 season was an eventful one. Head coach Marco Baroni, hired in the summer of 2025 on a two-year contract, was sacked after a 0-3 defeat to Genoa on 23 February 2026, with the team close to the relegation zone at the time. Roberto D'Aversa took over the same day and steadily guided Torino to safety and a 13th-place finish. It can be a bit of stressful to go through a season with a coaching change in the middle of the second half, but the 2026-2027 campaign under Ignazio Abate, the new head coach since 1 July 2026 on a contract until 2028, builds on the lessons of that season. In the Coppa Italia, Torino beat AS Roma 3-2 in the round of 16, before being knocked out in the quarter-finals by Inter Milan 1-2.
