Stadium Information
Name:
Mapei Stadium – Città del Tricolore
Capacity:
approximately 21,525 seats
Address:
Via Guasco 7, 42124 Reggio Emilia, Italy
Club:
US Sassuolo Calcio
Description:
The Mapei Stadium opened in 1995 and was the first club-owned stadium in Italy, designed in the English style for maximum comfort and a clear view from every seat. The Mapei construction group, then led by Giorgio Squinzi, acquired the stadium at a court auction for €3.75 million and gave it its current name. Not only its modern architecture, also the unusual fact that Sassuolo do not play their home matches in their own town, but in the neighbouring city of Reggio Emilia, makes this stadium something special in Serie A. You will feel how comfortable and modern this stadium is compared with many older Italian grounds as soon as you take your seat for the first time.
The stadium originally served as home to local rivals Reggiana, before Mapei took it over. Not only this history, also the lingering tensions between supporter groups in the region over the stadium's use still shape the football culture of Reggio Emilia and the surrounding Emilia area today.
Best Ways to Reach the Mapei Stadium
Once your Sassuolo tickets are booked, it is time to work out how to get to the stadium. The Mapei Stadium sits in the northern part of Reggio Emilia, well accessible both from central Reggio Emilia and from Sassuolo itself. Not only by train, also by bus, bicycle and car, you can reach the stadium without much trouble. It can be a bit of stressful to plan the route the first time, but once you have done it, you will get used to it quickly. Here are your options from central Reggio Emilia:
By Train
Reggio Emilia AV station sits on the Milan-Bologna high-speed line and is well served, with additional connections via Reggio Emilia Centrale station. From either station you can reach the Mapei Stadium within a few minutes by bus or taxi.
By Bus
Several city bus lines connect central Reggio Emilia with the area around the Mapei Stadium, with stops just a few minutes' walk from the main entrances. Extra services run on matchdays, both towards the stadium before kick-off and back into the city centre after the final whistle. Depending on traffic, the ride from the city centre only takes a few minutes. During the bigger Serie A fixtures, when the stadium is close to full, the return buses tend to fill up quickly right after the final whistle, so it helps to build in a little extra time for that.
By Bicycle
Reggio Emilia is a flat, bike-friendly city, and the ride from the centre to the Mapei Stadium is largely flat and takes about 20 minutes. You will find bike racks near the stadium.
By Car
Reggio Emilia is well served by the A1 motorway, which connects the city to Milan and Bologna. From the city centre, the Mapei Stadium is only a few minutes away, in the northern part of town. Drivers arriving via the motorway should follow signs towards the city centre, then signs towards the stadium. Paid and free parking spaces can be found in the areas around the ground, although space is limited on big matchdays. After the final whistle, leaving the area can be a bit of stressful. Not only around the stadium itself, also on the approach roads, traffic can stay heavy for a while after a big match. Those who arrive early tend to get the best parking spots and an easier exit once the game is over.
The Stands of the Mapei Stadium
The Mapei Stadium is divided into four main areas: the Curva Nord, the Curva Sud, the Tribuna Est and the Tribuna Ovest. During Sassuolo home matches, the Curva Sud is the section reserved for the club's own supporters, while away fans are traditionally placed in the Curva Nord, with their own access and parking area. You will never feel like you are watching the match from far away, whichever stand you are seated in, since the modern, compact build keeps even the furthest seats close to the action. This is also one of the reasons a matchday at the Mapei Stadium feels so special. Not only the home end, also the away section sits close enough to make you feel part of the match.
Curva Sud
The Curva Sud is the section reserved for the club's own supporters, the area where Sassuolo's most loyal fans gather behind the goal for the full 90 minutes. You will find the best atmosphere in the stadium here, with a constant wall of noise, flags and chanting when the neroverdi play at home. It can be a bit of stressful for someone who has never experienced an Italian curva before, all that noise so close by, but if you want to feel what Sassuolo really means to the whole region, you will have quite a special experience in the Curva Sud.
Curva Nord
On the opposite side of the pitch sits the Curva Nord, where the away section is located during Sassuolo home matches. Fans of the visiting team travelling to the Mapei Stadium for a Sassuolo match are housed here, in a clearly separated section with its own access. The view from this end is good, with a clear line of sight across the whole pitch and towards the Curva Sud in the distance. Not only the distance, also the viewing angle from this section is a little sharper than from the side stands, so it helps to bring good binoculars if you want to follow every detail. Many away fans who sit here once say they would happily do it again.
Tribuna Est
The Tribuna Est runs along one side of the pitch, close to the grass with a direct view of the halfway line. From here you get one of the best viewing angles in the whole stadium, very close to the action and to the substitutes' benches. Tickets here are among the most sought-after in the ground, precisely because the closeness to the pitch is so exceptional.
Tribuna Ovest
Directly opposite the Tribuna Est sits the Tribuna Ovest, home to the stadium's boxes and hospitality areas. From here you get a very good overall view of everything happening on the pitch, sheltered from the sun and the occasional rain. Also this stand, thanks to its closeness to the exits, is a popular choice for families and first-time visitors. Also for a group visiting Sassuolo for the first time, this stand is usually a comfortable and relaxed choice, and getting in and out tends to be quick even when the ground is busy.
Which Stand Should You Choose?
We have created this table so you can compare the four sections of the Mapei Stadium at a glance. Look at what matters most to you, and you will find the right section.
| Priority | Best Stand | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Best atmosphere | Curva Sud | Sassuolo's own section, flags and chants, loudest part of the stadium for the full 90 minutes |
| Best view | Tribuna Est | Direct view of the halfway line, very close to the pitch and substitutes' benches |
| First visit | Tribuna Ovest | Covered, good overall view, easy access and exit |
| Families with children | Tribuna Ovest | Calmer than the Curva Sud, comfortable seats, sheltered from the weather |
| Small budget | Curva Sud, upper tier | Cheaper than the main stands, with a full view of the pitch |
| Singing and standing | Curva Sud | Expect to stand, sing and join the ultras for the full 90 minutes |
| Away supporters | Curva Nord (away section) | Separate entrance, full view of the pitch and of the Curva Sud in the distance |
| Premium comfort | Tribuna Ovest, boxes | Padded seats, best stadium service, direct access to the main stand |
About US Sassuolo Calcio
Current head coach:
Alberto Aquilani
Current captain:
Filippo Romagna
Last season's finish:
11th place, Serie A 2025-26
Club History
Sassuolo was founded in 1920 as Sassuolo Football Club and re-founded in 1974 after the merger of Sassolese and Sassuolo Sportiva FC. For decades the club played in the lower Italian divisions, until entrepreneur Giorgio Squinzi, with his Mapei building materials group, took a stake in 2002 and steadily pushed the club forward. Not only Mapei's financial backing, also smart work in the youth academy helped Sassuolo reach Serie A for the first time in 2013-14, where the club has kept surprising people ever since.
After relegation in 2023-24, Sassuolo achieved immediate promotion as Serie B champions in the 2024-25 season under head coach Fabio Grosso, with 78 goals scored, the best attack in the league, and a 16-point lead over third place. In the 2025-26 season, the club settled comfortably into the top flight and finished 11th with 49 points. A highlight of the season was a 3-0 away win over Atalanta on 9 November 2025, where Domenico Berardi scored twice and Andrea Pinamonti also found the net. Grosso left the club in June 2026 for Fiorentina, and since then Alberto Aquilani, previously the promotion-winning coach at Catanzaro, has been in charge of the team.
Sassuolo and Emilia
Sassuolo is one of the smallest towns represented in Serie A, and does not even play its home matches in its own town, instead playing in the neighbouring city of Reggio Emilia, about 20 kilometres away. This unusual setup gives the club a particular identity within Italian football. Not only the close link with Mapei, also the role of ambitious little neighbour to Modena and Reggio Emilia still shapes the identity of the neroverdi today.
On matchdays, the streets around the Mapei Stadium fill with supporters in black and green, and many fans travel in from across the province of Modena. A visit to the historic centre of Sassuolo itself, with its Palazzo Ducale, is also popular among many away supporters before or after the match. If you want to spend a quiet afternoon before the match, many supporters combine the stadium visit with a short trip into Sassuolo itself.
Famous Players
Domenico Berardi is the undisputed icon of Sassuolo, the club's all-time top scorer for more than a decade and long-time captain as well. Manuel Locatelli and Gianluca Scamacca, both later transferred to bigger Italian clubs, were also developed into internationals at Sassuolo. Francesco Caputo scored the goals behind several successful Sassuolo seasons in Serie A. Not only these names from the past, also captain Filippo Romagna secured himself a permanent place in the club's recent history after his return from a long injury absence.
Sassuolo Honours and Titles
Sassuolo have not yet won a major national title, but can point to the best league finish in their history: 6th place in the 2015-16 season with 61 points, which earned the club its first-ever Europa League qualifying spot, a result repeated in 2020-21. The immediate promotion as Serie B champions in 2024-25 also ranks among the club's greatest sporting achievements. It is a remarkable record for a club from a town of fewer than 50,000 people, firmly established in Serie A since 2013. Affordable and premium tickets for Sassuolo in Serie A and Coppa Italia are now available on Livefootballtickets.com.
Greatest achievements:
Serie B champions 2024-25, 2 UEFA Europa League qualifications (2015-16, 2020-21)
Best Serie A finish:
6th place, 2015-16 season with 61 points
Landmark match:
3-0 away win over Atalanta on 9 November 2025 (brace by Domenico Berardi, goal by Andrea Pinamonti)
Sassuolo Rivalries
Main Rivalry
The Clash with Modena
The most important rivalry in Sassuolo's world is the clash with the club's closest geographic rival, Modena, from the same province. The two clubs have faced each other repeatedly in Serie B in recent years, and every meeting carries particular weight for both sets of supporters. Not only the geographic closeness, also the size gap between the more traditional Modena and the financially stronger Sassuolo gives this fixture its intensity. It can be a bit of stressful for an outsider to fully understand this rivalry, given how deep the emotions run on both sides of the province.
On matchdays against Modena, the whole region is divided, and supporters travel in from across the province of Modena to follow the match live. Even beyond the immediate area, this fixture is recognised as one of the most interesting derbies in Emilia, precisely because it links one of the region's most tradition-rich clubs with the most successful sporting rise of recent decades. You will hear supporters from both sides talk for years about past editions of this fixture.
Other Rivalries
Besides the clash with Modena, there is also a tense relationship with Reggiana, the original tenants of what is now the Mapei Stadium, before Mapei took the stadium over. Not only the fact that Sassuolo play their home matches in Reggiana's former ground, also the club's greater financial resources continue to cause resentment among Reggiana supporters to this day. This rivalry also adds to the particular football culture of Emilia-Romagna, where several clubs compete for recognition in a very small area.
