The current stadium was inaugurated in 1985 by Prince Rainier III, replacing the original venue that carried the same name. Association Sportive de Monaco Football Club was founded on August 23, 1924 and is based in the Fontvieille district of Monaco. The club is unusual in that, although the Principality is an independent country, AS Monaco are a member of the French Football Federation and compete in Ligue 1, with their training center just over the border in France at La Turbie.
