Great experience, everything ran smoothly, the only thing that would be nice is getting the tickets a bit earlier than on the day of the game. but it is a minor issue.

Stadium information

Name:

Stadion Wankdorf

Capacity:

31,500

Address:

Papiermühlestrasse 71, 3014 Bern, Switzerland

Stadion Wankdorf Bern

Description:

The old Wankdorf was Young Boys' home for decades, until they decided to move to the new Stadion Wankdorf. The ground that stood here before was one of the most famous in world soccer. It hosted the 1954 World Cup final, the game where West Germany beat Hungary and which the Germans still call the Miracle of Bern. That stadium was torn down in 2001, and the new Wankdorf opened in 2005 on the same spot. It's the biggest stadium in Switzerland, with a capacity of 31,500, and some of those fans can book their Young Boys tickets through our secure booking system. One thing to know before you travel: Young Boys play on an artificial field, which is unusual for a club at this level in Europe.

Best way to travel to Stadion Wankdorf

Once you've booked your Young Boys tickets, it's time to figure out how to get to the stadium. The club advises everyone to take public transportation, and there's a good reason for that: your game ticket is also your travel ticket. It gives you free travel in the Libero zones 100 and 101, from three hours before kickoff until three hours after the final whistle, night buses included. Here are the options you can use to reach the stadium.

By Train

Bern Wankdorf is the nearest station, and it could hardly be easier. The trip from Bern Hauptbahnhof takes about three minutes, with one stop in between. Several S-Bahn lines stop there, among them the S1, S2, S3, S4 and S44, and on game days the railway puts on extra services. From the platform it's a short walk to the stadium.

By Tram and Bus

Tram 9 runs from the middle of Bern to the Bern Wankdorf, Bahnhof stop, right next to the stadium. Bus line 20 covers the same route from the main station. Buses 40 and 41 stop at the Wankdorf-Center, the shopping center next door to the stadium. All of these are included in your game ticket.

By Car

If you come by car, take the A1 from Basel, Zürich or Solothurn, or the A6 from Thun and Interlaken, and exit at Bern Wankdorf. There are around 640 paid parking spaces at the Wankdorf-Center. Be aware that the club and the city would rather see you on the tram. Roads around the stadium get closed on game days, and the traffic afterward is slow.

By Bicycle

Cycling to the Stadion Wankdorf is easier than you think. It's a quick, healthy way to make your trip and saves you a lot of money. Bern is a compact city, and the ride out to the Wankdorf takes no time at all. On a bike you have all the freedom you need — you can get past traffic jams and avoid crowded public transportation.

Stadion Wankdorf guide

The Stadion Wankdorf is the biggest one in the Swiss Super League. Its 31,500 seats are almost always sold out. That's where we come in — we've got you covered with tickets for every single Young Boys game. The stadium is divided into four sectors: A, B, C and D.

Sektor D, the Ostkurve

Sektor D is home to Young Boys' most vocal fans. Everybody in Bern simply calls it the Ostkurve, the east curve. This is where the die-hard Young Boys fans sit. It's a standing sector, and the waiting list for a season ticket here runs seven to eight years, which tells you everything about how popular it is. The Ostkurve is known for the loudest atmosphere in the stadium. If you want to experience real Swiss soccer, look for Sektor D tickets. The stand sits behind one of the goals, so whenever Young Boys play toward this goal, you'll get the authentic yellow-and-black feeling.

Gästesektor

On the opposite side of the Ostkurve you'll find the Gästesektor. This is the away end of the Wankdorf, and it holds the visiting fans. It was rebuilt a few years ago, which is how the stadium got a bit bigger. Especially when Basel come to town, you'll feel the tension and rivalry in this corner of the stadium. When you book tickets for a Young Boys away game, this is the type of sector you'll end up in.

Haupttribüne

Along the side of the field you'll find the Haupttribüne, the main stand of the Wankdorf. This stand offers perfect sightlines across the entire field. For a business-class experience, you can sit in the hospitality area. The Haupttribüne is a bit more about luxury and a bit less about the soccer atmosphere, but you can be sure you'll have the best view in the stadium. The dugouts are on this side as well, so you can hear the managers shouting and watch the players warm up from up close.

Gegentribüne

It's no surprise that this stand sits on the opposite side from the Haupttribüne. There are also quite a lot of similarities with the main stand. You get amazing sightlines, but you'll also be surrounded by somewhat quieter fans. This is the part of the stadium where a lot of Bern families sit.

Which stand should you choose?

It's important to make the best decision when booking your Young Boys tickets. That's why we've created this table with a quick comparison of the four sectors. Check what matters to you and you'll find the best stand for your needs.

Priority Best Stand Why
Best atmosphere Sektor D, the Ostkurve The home end, standing and singing all game
Best view Haupttribüne, halfway line You look straight across the field
First-time visitor Haupttribüne or Gegentribüne Good view and a calmer crowd
Families with children Gegentribüne Seats, roof and restrooms close by
Budget-conscious Gegentribüne upper The cheapest seats with a good view
Singing & standing Sektor D A standing sector, you stand the whole game
See the players Haupttribüne, lower rows The dugouts and the tunnel are on this side
Premium comfort Haupttribüne hospitality Padded seats and lounge access

Other information

Young Boys started out as a students' soccer team. A group of students in Bern decided to form a club on March 14, 1898. The name came from Basel, where a club called Old Boys already existed, so the young men from Bern called themselves the Young Boys. They play in yellow and black, which is why you'll hear them called die Gelb-Schwarzen, though most people just say YB. After the great side of the late 1950s, the club waited 32 years for another title. Then came 2018, and Young Boys have been the team to beat in Switzerland ever since.

American influences

BSC Young Boys is a Swiss club through and through, but its most recent golden era had a distinctly American face. Jordan Pefok — the United States international, born in Washington, D.C. — led the line for Young Boys from 2020 to 2022 and became one of the most reliable strikers in the country. He was the top scorer as Young Boys ran away with the 2021-22 Swiss Super League title, and he once put four goals past Lugano in a single game. His form in Bern cemented his place in the USMNT set-up before he moved on to Union Berlin in Germany. For American fans, Pefok's spell is the clearest recent link between Young Boys and the US game.

Rivalries

Main Rivals

The Klassiker against FC Basel

The biggest game in Swiss soccer is Young Boys against FC Basel. These two have shared most of the championships of the last 20 years between them — first Basel with eight in a row, then Young Boys with five in seven seasons. The rivalry grew more and more intense every time the title came down to a meeting between them. Both sets of fans travel in numbers, and the atmosphere is the best you'll find in the country.

FC Bern

The oldest rivalry in the city is the one with FC Bern. Young Boys were formed by young players who came out of FC Bern, and the older club didn't take that well. The first derby was played on August 26, 1900. Things got worse when Young Boys built the Wankdorf in 1925 and became the big club in town. FC Bern have long since dropped down the divisions, so this one lives mostly in the history books now.

Minor Rivalries

Zürich and Grasshopper

Games against FC Zürich and Grasshopper Club Zürich carry weight because those two were the dominant clubs of Swiss soccer for most of the last century. There's no derby name for these games, but beating the big Zürich clubs still means something in Bern.
