Great experience, everything ran smoothly, the only thing that would be nice is getting the tickets a bit earlier than on the day of the game. but it is a minor issue.

Stadium information

Name:

St. Jakob-Park

Capacity:

38,512 (37,500 all-seated for European games)

Address:

St. Jakobs-Strasse 395, 4052 Basel, Switzerland

St. Jakob-Park Basel

Description:

The St. Jakob-Park is the biggest soccer stadium in Switzerland, and everybody in Basel calls it the Joggeli. It opened in March 2001 with a scoreless draw against Lausanne, on the site of the old ground of the same name. The stadium was designed by Herzog & de Meuron, the Basel architects who also built the Tate Modern in London and the Bird's Nest in Beijing, and it shows. For European games the capacity comes down to 37,500 because the standing areas have to be converted to seats. The stadium holds 38,512 people for a league game, and some of those fans can book their FC Basel tickets through our secure booking system.

Best way to travel to St. Jakob-Park

Once you've booked your FC Basel tickets, it's time to figure out how to get to the stadium. The club advises everyone to take public transportation, and your game ticket makes that simple: it gives you free travel across the whole Northwest Switzerland tariff network on game day. Here are the options you can use to reach the stadium.

By Tram

Tram is how almost everyone gets to the Joggeli. Line 14 runs straight to the St. Jakob stop, right outside the stadium. If you're arriving at Basel SBB, take tram 8, 10 or 11 to Aeschenplatz and change to the 14 there. The whole trip takes about 10 minutes, and the trams run every few minutes before and after the game.

By Bus and Train

Bus line 36 and the BLT lines 37 and 47 stop at Hagnaustrasse, a short walk from the stadium. From Basel Badischer Bahnhof on the German side, the 36 brings you almost to the door in about 15 minutes. There's also a small station called Basel St. Jakob right next to the stadium, but it only opens for events, when the railway runs a shuttle from Basel SBB that takes around five minutes.

By Car

If you come by car, take the A2 and exit at Basel-St. Jakob, or come in on the H18 from the southeast. There's a parking garage underneath the stadium and several more nearby at Leimgrube, Ruchfeld and the Messe. The club still tells you to come early, because the roads around the Joggeli fill up long before kickoff and take a while to clear afterward.

By Bicycle

Cycling to the St. Jakob-Park is easier than you think. It's a quick, healthy way to make your trip and saves you a lot of money. Basel is one of the best cycling cities in Switzerland, and the route out along the Birs is flat the whole way. On a bike you have all the freedom you need — you can get past traffic jams and avoid crowded public transportation.

St. Jakob-Park guide

The St. Jakob-Park is the biggest one in the Swiss Super League. Its 38,512 seats are almost always sold out. That's where we come in — we've got you covered with tickets for every single FC Basel game. The stadium is divided into sectors: A, B, C and D around the field, plus G in the tier above.

Sektor D, the Muttenzerkurve

Sektor D is home to FC Basel's most vocal fans, and it's one of the famous ends in European soccer. Everybody calls it the Muttenzerkurve, after the road out toward the village of Muttenz behind it. This is where the die-hard FC Basel fans sit. It's a standing sector holding 4,843 people, and the club asks visiting fans not to wear away colors in here. The Muttenzerkurve is known for the loudest atmosphere in the stadium, and the choreographies they put on before big European nights get shown around the world. If you want to experience real Swiss soccer, look for Sektor D tickets.

Sektor B, the Gästesektor

On the opposite side of the Muttenzerkurve you'll find Sektor B, with blocks B0, B1 and B2. This is the away end of the St. Jakob-Park. One thing to know: Basel doesn't sell away tickets online — you get them through your own club or at the gate on the day. Especially when Zürich come to town, you'll feel the tension and rivalry in this corner of the stadium. When you book tickets for a Basel away game, this is the type of sector you'll end up in.

Sektor A, the Haupttribüne

Along the side of the field you'll find Sektor A, the main stand. This stand offers perfect sightlines across the entire field. For a business-class experience, you can sit in the hospitality area. The Haupttribüne is a bit more about luxury and a bit less about the soccer atmosphere, but you can be sure you'll have the best view in the stadium. The dugouts are on this side as well, so you can hear the managers shouting and watch the players warm up from up close.

Sektor C

It's no surprise that this stand sits on the opposite side from the Haupttribüne. There are also quite a lot of similarities with the main stand. You get amazing sightlines, but you'll also be surrounded by somewhat quieter fans. The wheelchair spaces are in the back rows of this sector. Above it all runs Sektor G, the upper gallery that was added later and gives you the whole field laid out below you.

Which stand should you choose?

It's important to make the best decision when booking your FC Basel tickets. That's why we've created this table with a quick comparison of the sectors. Check what matters to you and you'll find the best stand for your needs.

Priority Best Stand Why
Best atmosphere Sektor D, the Muttenzerkurve 4,843 standing places and the big choreographies
Best view Sektor A, halfway line You look straight across the field
First-time visitor Sektor A or Sektor C Good view and a calmer crowd
Families with children Sektor C Seats under the roof, restrooms close by
Budget-conscious Sektor G, the upper gallery The cheapest seats with a good view
Singing & standing Sektor D A standing sector, you stand the whole game
See the players Sektor A, lower rows The dugouts and the tunnel are on this side
Premium comfort Sektor A hospitality Padded seats and lounge access

Other information

FC Basel was started by a newspaper advertisement. In November 1893, a young man named Roland Geldner put a notice in the paper asking anyone interested in soccer to come to a meeting, and eleven men turned up. They founded the club on November 15, 1893, most of them from the university. The red and blue came from the local rowing club, which is why the team is known as Rotblau to this day. Basel is the most successful club in the country, with 21 championships, including eight in a row between 2009 and 2017 — a run nobody in Switzerland had managed before.

American influences

FC Basel is of course a real Swiss club, but the biggest American chapter in the story belongs to its captain. Xherdan Shaqiri, the most famous Swiss player of his generation and a Champions League winner with Liverpool, spent two and a half seasons in the United States before coming home. He joined the Chicago Fire from Lyon in February 2022 as a Designated Player and was the highest-paid player in Major League Soccer in both 2022 and 2023. The move never quite delivered the success he was after, and in 2024 he returned to the club where he started, taking the captain's armband in 2025 and quickly rediscovering his best form. Alongside him, coach Stephan Lichtsteiner — a Juventus title winner with more than a hundred caps for Switzerland — took charge in January 2026. Shaqiri's years in Chicago are the clearest American thread in the current Basel side, a reminder of how closely the modern game now connects Switzerland and the United States.

European nights

No Swiss club has done better in Europe. Basel has reached the Champions League group stage seven times, more than anyone else in the country, and reached the round of 16 on four occasions. The best-remembered season is 2013-14, when they beat Manchester United 2-1 at the Joggeli and then won 2-1 at Chelsea in the group stage. They also reached the semifinals of the Europa League in 2013 and of the Conference League in 2023.

Rivalries

Main Rivals

FC Zürich

The biggest rivalry in Swiss soccer is Basel against FC Zürich. It's the country's two biggest cities against each other, and it turned bitter in May 2006, when Zürich scored in the last minute of the final day at the Joggeli to take the title away from Basel. What happened on the field afterward is still talked about 20 years later. The rivalry has grown more and more intense ever since, and these games are policed accordingly.

Young Boys

The modern Klassiker is Basel against Young Boys. Between them, these two have taken almost every championship of the last 20 years — first Basel with their eight in a row, and then Bern with a run of their own. When they meet, there's usually something at the top of the table riding on it.

Minor Rivalries

Grasshopper Club Zürich

The rivalry with Grasshopper Club Zürich comes from the same place as the one with FCZ. Grasshopper was the dominant club of Swiss soccer for most of the 20th century, and Basel has spent the last 20 years overtaking their trophy count.
