Stadium information
Name:
Stade de Tourbillon
Capacity:
around 16,000
Address:
Rue des Echutes 38, 1950 Sion, Switzerland
Description:
The Stade de Tourbillon opened on August 11, 1968, and has been FC Sion's home ever since. It got a big rebuild in the 1980s and for a while held over 20,000, which is a lot of people for a town the size of Sion. These days the working figure is around 16,000, and the number you'll see quoted moves around depending on which sectors are open for a given game. What doesn't change is the setting. The ground sits beneath the two hills of Valère and Tourbillon, with their medieval castles looking down on the field, and there are few better views in European soccer. Some of those fans can book their FC Sion tickets through our secure booking system.
Best way to travel to Stade de Tourbillon
Once you've booked your FC Sion tickets, it's time to figure out how to get to the stadium. Sion is a small town and the stadium is close to the center, so most fans simply walk. Here are the options you can use to reach the stadium.
By Train
Sion railway station sits on the main line through the Rhône valley, with direct trains from Geneva, Lausanne, Brig and beyond. From the station it's a walk of roughly 15 to 25 minutes to the Stade de Tourbillon, depending on your pace and which way you go. Follow the signs toward the castles and you won't get lost.
By Bus
Local city buses run from the bus station next to the railway station out toward the stadium, and there's a stop within a few minutes' walk of the turnstiles. Lines and stops do get renumbered from season to season, so it's worth a quick look at the timetable on the day. For most visitors the walk is quicker anyway.
By Car
If you come by car, take the A9 through the Rhône valley and exit at Sion-Est. From there the road signs point you toward the parking lots. Be aware that the spaces closest to the stadium are often reserved for members and fill up quickly. The club regularly directs fans toward the parking lots in the center of town and by the hospital instead.
By Bicycle
Cycling to the Stade de Tourbillon is easier than you think. It's a quick, healthy way to make your trip and saves you a lot of money. The valley floor is flat, whatever the mountains around it suggest, and the ride from the station takes only a few minutes. On a bike you have all the freedom you need — you can get past traffic jams and avoid crowded public transportation.
Stade de Tourbillon guide
The Stade de Tourbillon is one of the older stadiums in the Swiss Super League, and it has kept its character. That's where we come in — we've got you covered with tickets for every single FC Sion game. The stadium is divided into four sides: the Tribune Nord, the Tribune Sud, the Tribune Est and the main stand.
Tribune Nord
The Tribune Nord, which everybody in the Valais calls the Gradin Nord, is home to FC Sion's most vocal fans. This is where the die-hard FC Sion fans sit. The Gradin Nord is known for the loudest atmosphere in the stadium, and it has been closed by the club more than once as a punishment after trouble, which tells you how seriously the people in there take their soccer. If you want to experience real Swiss soccer, look for Tribune Nord tickets. Whenever Sion play toward this end, you'll get the authentic red-and-white feeling.
Tribune Sud
On the opposite side of the Gradin Nord you'll find the Tribune Sud. This is normally the away end of the Stade de Tourbillon. For ordinary league games it's sometimes kept closed unless a big crowd is expected, and for a few games the club has put the visiting fans somewhere else entirely, so always check the game bulletin before you travel. When you book tickets for a Sion away game, this is the type of sector you'll end up in.
Main stand
Along the side of the field you'll find the main stand. This stand offers perfect sightlines across the entire field. For a business-class experience, you can sit in the hospitality area. The main stand is a bit more about luxury and a bit less about the soccer atmosphere, but you can be sure you'll have the best view in the stadium. The dugouts are on this side as well, so you can hear the managers shouting and watch the players warm up from up close.
Tribune Est
It's no surprise that this stand sits on the opposite side from the main stand. There are also quite a lot of similarities with it. You get amazing sightlines, but you'll also be surrounded by somewhat quieter fans. This is the side where you get the best view of the castles on the hills behind the stadium.
Which stand should you choose?
It's important to make the best decision when booking your FC Sion tickets. That's why we've created this table with a quick comparison of the sectors. Check what matters to you and you'll find the best stand for your needs.
| Priority | Best Stand | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Best atmosphere | Tribune Nord | The Gradin Nord, where the singing comes from |
| Best view | Main stand, halfway line | You look straight across the field |
| First-time visitor | Main stand or Tribune Est | Good view and a calmer crowd |
| Families with children | Main stand | Seats, roof and restrooms close by |
| Budget-conscious | Tribune Est | The cheapest seats with a good view |
| Best photo of the stadium | Tribune Est | The castles of Valère and Tourbillon behind the field |
| See the players | Main stand, lower rows | The dugouts and the tunnel are on this side |
| Premium comfort | Main stand hospitality | Padded seats and lounge access |

Other information
FC Sion was founded in 1909 and is the club of the Valais, the mountain canton in the southwest of Switzerland. They play in red and white, which is where the name Les Rouge et Blancs comes from, and in the rest of the country people simply call them the Valaisans. Sion has never been the richest club in Switzerland and has only won the league twice, but in the cup they have been something else entirely. The man behind the club since 2003 is Christian Constantin, a local architect and one of the great characters of Swiss soccer, who bought Sion when they were relegated and close to going under.
American influences
FC Sion is about as Swiss as a club gets. It's controlled by the larger-than-life local owner Christian Constantin, has no American investor, and has never fielded a USMNT international — its biggest-name signings over the years have been European veterans like Gennaro Gattuso, not Americans. The United States influence in the Swiss Super League is real, but it runs through other clubs: American businessman Joe Mansueto owns Lugano, Los Angeles FC took over Grasshopper, and USMNT striker Jordan Pefok won the title with Young Boys. For US fans, Sion is worth watching for its passionate valley support and its cup pedigree rather than any American connection.
FC Sion Honors & Trophies
FC Sion consistently competes in the top tier of the Swiss Super League. The club also plays in European competition, and these high-profile games draw a lot of attention from fans and ticket buyers because of their importance. Cheap and premium FC Sion soccer tickets for the Swiss Super League are available to buy now at LiveFootballTickets.com.
Swiss Championship wins:
2 (latest: 1996/97)
Swiss Cup wins:
13 (latest: 2014/15)
The cup record
Here's the statistic every Sion fan will tell you about. The club reached 13 Swiss Cup finals and won all 13 of them, from 1965 through 2015. No other club in Swiss soccer has anything like it. The run finally ended in 2017, when Basel beat them 3-0 in the final and handed Sion their first-ever defeat at that stage.
Rivalries
Main Rivals
The Derby du Rhône against Servette
FC Sion against Servette is the only real derby in French-speaking Switzerland, and both clubs describe it that way. The first meeting was in September 1962, when Servette won 6-0 in Geneva, and the two have played more than a hundred league games since, with almost nothing between them. The rivalry has grown more and more intense as these two became the standard-bearers of Romandy — the mountain canton against the city on the lake.
Lausanne-Sport
The other Romandy fixture is against Lausanne-Sport. It doesn't carry the same history as the Servette game, but the Swiss press still bills it as a derby romand, and the two sets of fans don't need much encouragement.
Minor Rivalries
FC Basel
There's no old grudge behind the games with FC Basel, but there's one very good reason Sion fans circle this game. Basel is the club that ended the perfect cup run in 2017. That one still stings in the Valais.
