It was given a big rebuild in the 1980s and for a while it held over 20,000, which is a lot of people for a town the size of Sion. These days the working figure is around 16,000, and the number you will see quoted moves about depending on which sectors are open for a given match. What does not change is the setting. The ground sits under the two hills of Valère and Tourbillon with their medieval castles looking down on the pitch, and there are few better views in European football. By Train
Sion railway station sits on the main line through the Rhône valley, with direct trains from Geneva, Lausanne, Brig and beyond. From the station it is a walk of roughly fifteen to twenty-five minutes to the Stade de Tourbillon, depending on your pace and which way you go. Follow the signs towards the castles and you will not get lost.
By Bus
Local city buses run from the bus station next to the railway station out towards the ground, and there is a stop within a few minutes' walk of the turnstiles. Lines and stops do get renumbered from season to season, so it is worth a quick look at the timetable on the day. For most visitors the walk is quicker anyway.
By Car
If you come by car, take the A9 through the Rhône valley and leave at the exit Sion-Est. From there the road signs point you towards the car parks. Be aware that the spaces closest to the stadium are often kept for members and fill up quickly. FC Sion was founded in 1909 and is the club of the Valais, the mountain canton in the south west of Switzerland. They play in red and white, which is where the name Les Rouge et Blancs comes from, and in the rest of the country people simply call them the Valaisans. Sion have never been the richest club in Switzerland and they have only won the league twice, but in the cup they have been something else entirely. The man behind the club since 2003 is Christian Constantin, a local architect and one of the great characters of Swiss football, who bought Sion when they were relegated and close to going under.

FC Sion is of course a real Swiss club, but what are the actual Valaisan influences at the moment? The story here is really about the man in charge upstairs. Christian Constantin has got through around 60 coaching changes in his 25 years as president, involving 46 different people, and he has twice put himself in the dugout. Which makes the current situation remarkable. Didier Tholot has been in the job since the summer of 2023 and signed a new deal that runs to 2029, so by Sion standards this counts as an era. The captain is midfielder Ali Kabacalman, who came from Yverdon and extended his own contract to 2028.

FC Sion against Servette is the only real derby in French-speaking Switzerland, and both clubs describe it that way. The first meeting was in September 1962, when Servette won 6-0 in Geneva, and the two have played more than a hundred league games since with almost nothing between them. The rivalry became heavier and heavier as these two became the standard bearers of Romandy, the mountain canton against the city on the lake.
