The Letzigrund is the home of FC Zürich and it is a slightly unusual one. It was rebuilt in 2006 and 2007 and it is first and foremost an athletics stadium, with a running track around the pitch. It has hosted the Weltklasse Zürich meeting every year since 1928, and Armin Hary ran the first ever ten-second 100 metres here in 1960. The other unusual thing is that FCZ share it with their city rivals Grasshopper, so the same ground swaps between the two clubs from week to week. A new stadium for both of them is planned on the old Hardturm site, but it has been through referendums and court appeals for years and there is no date for a move, so FCZ play here for now. By Tram

Tram 2 stops at Letzigrund, which is exactly where you want to be. Coming from Zürich Hauptbahnhof, take tram 3 towards Albisrieden or tram 14 towards Triemli, ride three stops to Stauffacher, then change onto the 2 towards Farbhof. Tram 3 to Albisriederplatz also works and leaves you a seven or eight minute walk away. On matchdays the city puts on extra trams.

By Train

Any train into Zürich Hauptbahnhof connects you to the trams above. If you would rather walk, take the S-Bahn one stop to Bahnhof Hardbrücke and it is about ten minutes on foot from there to the ground.

By Car

Driving is the option the club would rather you did not take. There is no public parking at the stadium itself. The nearest paid options are the Letzipark shopping centre and the Hardau II garage, both about five minutes on foot, or the Park and Ride at Altstetten which leaves you two tram stops away. Follow the signs for Stadion Letzigrund once you are in the city.

By Bicycle

Cycling to the Letzigrund is easier than you think. It is a quick and healthy way to make your journey and saves you a lot of money. Zürich is built for bikes and the ride out along the Badenerstrasse from the middle of town is flat and quick. On the bicycle you've got all the freedom you need. You can surpass traffic jams and avoid crowded public transport.

FC Zürich came out of a merger. Several small clubs in the city, among them FC Turicum and FC Excelsior, joined together in 1896 and played their first match that August against St. Gallen, a 3-3 draw. One of the men involved in those early years was Hans Gamper, who later moved to Spain and founded FC Barcelona. Where Grasshopper were the club of the wealthy and the students, FCZ became the club of working Zürich, and that difference still shapes how the two sets of supporters see each other. The last championship came in 2022, which took most of the country by surprise.

The derby against Grasshopper Club Zürich is the only one in Switzerland between two clubs from the same city, and it goes back a very long way. The first meeting was on 28 November 1897 and Grasshopper won it 7-2. More than 250 games later GC still lead the head-to-head. The rivalry started as a class thing, the students and the money at GC against the workers at FCZ, and it became heavier and heavier over the decades. These days they share a stadium, which does nothing to cool it down.

FC Basel

The other big one is FC Basel. It boiled over on the final day of the 2005-06 season, when Iulian Filipescu scored in the last seconds at the St. Jakob-Park to take the title off Basel and give it to Zürich. What happened after the whistle that afternoon is remembered as the worst trouble Swiss football has seen, and these two clubs have been kept well apart ever since.
