MLS rivalries and the matches worth travelling for
MLS has no relegation and no Big Six, so the fixtures that sell out are not decided by the table. They are decided by geography, by history, and lately by one player. These are the matches to plan a trip around.
Inter Miami and Lionel Messi
Since Messi arrived in 2023, Inter Miami have become the biggest draw in North American football. He won the Golden Boot with 29 goals in 2025 and captained the club to its first MLS Cup, beating Vancouver Whitecaps 3-1. In April 2026 the club moved into Miami Freedom Park, a purpose-built 26,700-seat ground in Grapeland Heights, after six seasons at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale. Away fixtures are a phenomenon of their own: opponents regularly move Miami matches into much larger stadiums, and the biggest crowd of the 2026 season came at a Colorado home game against them.
El Tráfico
Los Angeles FC against LA Galaxy is the newest of the great MLS rivalries and already the most watchable. Two clubs, one city, contrasting identities: the Galaxy with six MLS Cups and the Beckham era behind them, LAFC with a purpose-built ground in Exposition Park and a supporters' section that never sits down.
Cascadia Cup
Seattle Sounders, Portland Timbers and Vancouver Whitecaps contest a trophy that predates all three clubs' MLS entry, and the atmosphere at these matches is the closest MLS gets to a European away day. Providence Park, built in 1926 and wedged into the city, is regularly named the best matchday in the league.
Hell is Real
Columbus Crew against FC Cincinnati, named after a roadside billboard on the highway between the two cities. Two of the strongest teams of recent seasons, and two of the best atmospheres in the Eastern Conference.

The LA Galaxy remain the most successful club in league history with six MLS Cups. D.C. The direction of travel has reversed. Alphonso Davies left Vancouver for Bayern Munich, Miguel Almirón went from Atlanta to Newcastle, Brenden Aaronson and Mark McKenzie moved from Philadelphia to Europe, and Thiago Almada was sold from Atlanta after winning a World Cup. Watching an MLS match increasingly means watching a player who will be at a European club within two seasons.
About Major League Soccer
History
MLS was founded in 1993 and played its first season in 1996 with ten clubs. The early years were difficult: two Florida clubs folded after the 2001 season and the league dropped to ten teams. The turnaround came through soccer-specific stadiums, the arrival of David Beckham in 2007, and a run of expansion that has taken the league to thirty clubs, most recently San Diego FC in 2025.
How the league works
MLS is a single-entity league, which means the league itself contracts the players and the clubs operate as investors within it. In practice that produces a set of rules European fans find unfamiliar:
- No relegation. Finishing bottom costs you nothing but a season, and clubs enter and leave the league by expansion rather than performance.
- A salary budget. Every club works to the same cap, with a handful of exceptions.
- Designated Players. Each club can sign up to three players outside the cap. The rule was introduced for Beckham in 2007 and is still known as the Beckham Rule.
- Allocation money and Homegrown rules. Clubs trade cap space and draft picks in a way closer to American sport than to European football.
The season and the playoffs
Each club plays 34 regular season matches, ending on Decision Day in early November. The team with the best record across the whole league takes the Supporters' Shield, but the championship is decided in the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs, a knockout tournament running through November and December in which most of the league takes part. MLS Cup itself is hosted by the higher-seeded finalist rather than at a neutral venue, which means the final is only confirmed a matter of days in advance.
The 2027 calendar change
MLS is moving to a summer-to-spring season. The 2026-2027 campaign is the last of the traditional February to December format. A short transition season runs from February to May 2027 with a 14-game regular season and a full playoff, and from mid-July 2027 the league begins its first summer-to-spring campaign, concluding with MLS Cup in late May 2028. There will be a winter break from mid-December to early February, with no matches in January. The change aligns MLS with the international calendar and with the continental club competitions.
The 2026 World Cup
The 2026-2027 season was built around the World Cup on North American soil, with the league pausing from late May until mid-July to release players to their national teams. It is the longest World Cup break MLS has ever taken, and the season resumed in mid-July with a run of rivalry matches.
