World Cup history
The World Cup is the biggest event in football. Every four years the best countries meet each other somewhere on the world to decide which country is the best of all. This tournament is contested by men's senior national teams of FIFA members. The first ever World Cup tournament was held in 1930 in Montevideo, Uruguay. 13 teams participated in this first ever world cup tournament and were divided over four groups. Home team and favourites Uruguay played the final against Argentina for almost 70,000 enthusiastic fans. The first ever World Cup final ended up in a 4-2 victory for Uruguay. This tournament is played every four years, with the exception of 1942 and 1946 due to the Second World War. So the 2022 World Cup in Qatar will be the 22nd edition of this most prestigious international football event.
Former winners
All 21 previous World Cup titles are divided between eight winners. Only eight countries managed to reach the highest achievement you can get in the world of football. This are the eight countries who won one of more WC trophies:
- Brazil 5 times (1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002

England on World Cups
The highlight of football in England was the 1966 World Cup tournament in England. The home team managed to reach the final against West Germany. Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters scored for England in the final, while Helmut Haller and Wolfgang Weber scored for West Germany. The score was 2-2 at the end of regular time. Two goals by Hurst in extra time led to the first and only World Cup for England. Since then England always struggles to perform on WC's despite a surplus of good players. This team should be able to play for the final stages of this tournament. Do you believe in England's chances in this tournament? Support the Three Lions with the best World Cup 2026 tickets.
