Recent finals

2010 Spain versus Netherlands
The World Cup final in 2010 was played at Soccer City stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa. Spain already won the 2008 European Championship and could complete the double in this final. It was the first time that Spain reached the World Cup final. Their opponents Netherlands already had some WC final experience. After losing in 1974 against West Germany and in 1978 against Argentina, this was the third time Holland played a final. This match is marked as one of the hardest finals in the World Cup history. Both teams were very equal and tried to make the difference by playing hard and unfair. The biggest chance in regular time was for Arjen Robben, but the Spanish goalkeeper managed to tap the ball with his toe away from the goal. In extra time it was finally Andres Iniesta who scored the first and only goal of the match. Spain won their first World Cup and Netherlands lost their third WC final.

2014 Germany versus Argentina
The 2014 final was the opportunity for one of the best players in the world to get the highest trophy there is in football. Lionel Messi, according to many people in Argentina still not the best player ever, had the chance to win the World Cup with his country. Winning this trophy would give him the credits he deserves, but the opponent was a strong German squad. The 2014 final was the third consecutive World Cup final without a winner after 90 minutes. Both teams tried their best, but the score was still 0-0 after 90 minutes. Mario Götze scored the winning goal in the 113th minute of the match. This goal brought Germany their fourth World Cup trophy. Messi was still hunting for the first silverware with his country at that time.

2018 France versus Croatia
The World Cup 2018 final was a match between France and Croatia. The Croatian side managed to get to the final against all odds. France was the big favourite to win this final, and they did what they came for. After an exciting match with 6 goals, France became the World Champions after a 4-2 victory over Croatia.

2022 Argentina versus France
The 2022 World Cup final in Qatar will go down as one of the greatest matches in football history. Lionel Messi finally achieved his World Cup dream as Argentina defeated France 4-2 on penalties after a thrilling 3-3 draw. Messi opened the scoring from the penalty spot, and Ángel Di María doubled Argentina's lead in the first half. However, Kylian Mbappé scored a stunning hat-trick, including two goals in the final minutes to force extra time at 2-2. Messi scored again in extra time, but Mbappé equalized once more with another penalty to complete his hat-trick and send the match to penalties. Argentina won the shootout 4-2, giving Messi his first World Cup and Argentina their third title after 36 years.
