Copa del Rey
The prestigious Copa del Rey – officially the Campeonato de España – Copa de Su Majestad el Rey – is the oldest Spanish football competition, founded in 1903 and organised by the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF). The annual knockout tournament is open to clubs from La Liga and the Segunda División, with qualifying rounds for lower-league sides. The final is played at a neutral venue, with the Estadio de La Cartuja in Seville serving as the regular host. The Copa del Rey winner qualifies for the following season's UEFA Europa League. If the winner has already secured European football through their league position, the Europa League spot passes to the next highest-placed eligible team.

How the Copa del Rey works
The Copa del Rey is one of the few tournaments in European football where a village side can host a Champions League club in their own stadium – one of the reasons it is so beloved by Spanish fans. The competition starts in the autumn with a Preliminary Round for the smallest clubs, followed by two early rounds played on a geographical proximity basis, meaning teams face nearby opponents to reduce travel in the early stages.
La Liga's biggest clubs enter at the Round of 32 in December. The four Spanish Supercopa participants – Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid and Athletic Club – are seeded into separate pots to prevent them meeting before the quarter-finals. From the quarter-finals onwards all ties are single-leg matches, while the semi-finals are played over two legs. The final is a single match at the Estadio de La Cartuja in Seville, which has hosted the showpiece since 2020 and was expanded ahead of the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
Copa del Rey wins and trophies
Barcelona are the most successful club in Copa del Rey history with 32 titles, well clear of Athletic Bilbao in second place with 24 wins and Real Madrid third with 20. Barcelona claimed their record-extending 32nd Copa del Rey title in dramatic fashion, beating fierce rivals Real Madrid 3-2 after extra time in the 2025 final at La Cartuja in Seville – with Jules Koundé firing home the winner in the 116th minute. The 2025–26 Copa del Rey is the 124th edition of Spain's premier football cup. The final will be held at La Cartuja in Seville on 18 April 2026, between Atlético Madrid and Real Sociedad. Messi also shares the record for the most Copa del Rey winners' medals at seven, alongside Busquets, Gerard Piqué and Athletic Bilbao legend Agustín Gaínza.
