Real Sociedad in the Copa del Rey

Real Sociedad, based in the city of Donostia-San Sebastián in the Basque Country, are one of Spain's most historic clubs and founding members of La Liga. Known as La Real or the txuri-urdin – the white-blues – they play their home matches at the Reale Arena (Anoeta) and have a proud tradition in Spanish cup football stretching back to the very origins of the competition.

In fact, Real Sociedad's connection to the Copa del Rey goes back further than the club itself: the team that became Real Sociedad won the very first Copa del Rey final they entered in 1909, competing under the name Club Ciclista de San Sebastián. Three titles and eight final appearances later, they return to the Copa del Rey Final in 2026 – facing Atlético Madrid at La Cartuja in Seville on 18 April.

Real Sociedad Copa del Rey titles

Real Sociedad have won the Copa del Rey three times. Each title has come in a different era of the club's history and each carries its own special significance for supporters in San Sebastián.

1909 – Club Ciclista de San Sebastián 3-1 Español de Madrid

Real Sociedad's first Copa del Rey title predates the club's official founding. In 1909, the players who would go on to found Real Sociedad competed under the name Club Ciclista de San Sebastián due to registration complications. They beat Español de Madrid 3-1 in the final in Madrid, with goals from George McGuinness (2) and Charles Simmons. Months after that victory, on 7 September 1909, those same players formally founded Real Sociedad. The trophy is still displayed in the Real Sociedad museum and the 1909 title is rightly celebrated as the club's own.

1987 – Real Sociedad beat Atlético Madrid on penalties

Real Sociedad's second Copa del Rey came after a 34-year wait, in a memorable final at La Romareda in Zaragoza on 27 June 1987. Playing against Atlético Madrid, the match ended 2-2 after extra time, with goals from Roberto López Ufarte and Txiki Begiristain. In the penalty shootout, legendary goalkeeper Luis Arconada saved a kick from Quique Ramos to hand La Real a 4-2 penalty win and their second Copa del Rey title. The 1987 triumph qualified Real Sociedad for the European Cup Winners' Cup – the only European competition they had yet to contest at that point.

2020 (played 2021) – Real Sociedad 1-0 Athletic Bilbao

Real Sociedad's most recent Copa del Rey title came in the most unusual of circumstances. The 2020 final was postponed for nearly a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, eventually being played on 3 April 2021 at La Cartuja in Seville – the first ever all-Basque Copa del Rey final. In a tense encounter, captain Mikel Oyarzabal converted a penalty in the 63rd minute to give La Real a 1-0 win over fierce rivals Athletic Bilbao. It was a moment of huge emotion for the club, ending a 34-year wait between the 1987 and 2020 titles, with Oyarzabal lifting the trophy as club captain in Seville.

Real Sociedad's Copa del Rey final record

The 2026 final will be Real Sociedad's ninth Copa del Rey final appearance. Their record reads three wins and five losses, with only Barcelona having beaten them in finals – four times in total (1913, 1928, 1951 and 1988). The full list of Real Sociedad's Copa del Rey final appearances:

Real Sociedad in the Copa del Rey 2025-26

Real Sociedad have been one of Spain's most consistent Copa del Rey performers in recent seasons, reaching the semi-finals in three consecutive campaigns before finally going all the way to the final in 2025-26. Under manager Pellegrino Matarazzo, La Real played disciplined, high-intensity football throughout the competition, with their defensive organisation and pace on the counter proving the keys to their run.

Their semi-final against Athletic Bilbao was a masterclass in focus and control. La Real won the first leg 1-0 at San Mamés and repeated the feat in the second leg at the Reale Arena, securing a composed 2-0 aggregate victory in one of the most hotly anticipated Basque derbies in years. The win set up a final against Atlético Madrid – and a mouth-watering chance to win the Copa del Rey for a fourth time.
