The Stadion Allmend had been FC Luzern's home since 1934, until it was torn down in 2009 and this ground was built in its place. The new stadium opened on July 31, 2011 with a scoreless draw against Thun and cost just under 80 million francs. It spent its first 15 years as the swissporarena, but that naming deal ran out, and from July 1, 2026 the ground is called the thermoplan arena, after a coffee machine manufacturer from nearby Weggis that signed up for at least 10 years. It holds 16,800 people, and some of those fans can book their FC Luzern tickets through our secure booking system.
Best way to travel to thermoplan arena
Once you've booked your FC Luzern tickets, it's time to figure out how to get to the stadium. The good news is that the ground has its own railway station about two minutes from the turnstiles. One thing to be aware of: FCL game tickets used to include free public transportation in the local zone, but that arrangement ended with the 2025-26 season, so you'll need a regular ticket now. Here are the options you can use to reach the stadium.
By Train
This is the easy one. From Luzern main station, take the S-Bahn line S4 or S5 one stop to Luzern Allmend/Messe, which sits right beside the stadium and opened in 2012 for exactly this purpose. The trip takes a couple of minutes, and the walk at the other end is about the same.
By Bus
Local buses run from the concourse outside Luzern station out to the Allmend and Messe area, and the ride takes around 10 minutes. Timetables get adjusted around kickoff times, so it's worth checking on the day. For most visitors the train is quicker anyway.
By Car
If you come by car, take the A2 and exit at Luzern-Horw, then follow the signs for the Allmend and the Messe Luzern exhibition center, which shares the site. There are game-day parking lots close to the ground with a flat fee, but the spaces go first come, first served, and the roads out afterward are slow.
By Bicycle
Cycling to the thermoplan arena is easier than you think. It's a quick, healthy way to make your trip and saves you a lot of money. FC Luzern was founded on August 12, 1901 at the Restaurant Seidenhof in the middle of Lucerne, though there are newspaper mentions of soccer being played in the city as far back as 1897. Everybody just calls the club the FCL. For a club from a city of 80,000 people, the support is remarkable, and the ground is regularly among the fullest in the country. The one championship came in 1988-89, and the cup has been won three times, most recently in 2021, when Luzern beat St. Gallen 3-1 to end a 29-year wait for a trophy.
American influences
FC Luzern doesn't have an American owner or a USMNT star, but it has quietly become a pipeline to Major League Soccer. Defender François Affolter went straight from Luzern to the San Jose Earthquakes in 2017, and around the same time full-back Jérôme Thiesson made the move from Luzern to Minnesota United. Both crossed the Atlantic at the peak of their careers to help build up expansion-era MLS sides.
