The Stadio Benito Stirpe has been Frosinone Calcio’s home since October 2017, and carries the name of the club’s historic president from the 1960s. The construction history is unusually long: work began as far back as the mid-1980s under the original project name “Casaleno”, and the ground stood unfinished for more than thirty years, long counted among Italy’s so-called “cathedrals in the desert”. In February 2012, part of the stand roof even collapsed under heavy snowfall, before construction was finally completed in 2017. Not only the long build time, also the fully covered design with individual seating right around the ground make the Stadio Benito Stirpe one of the most modern stadiums in Serie A today. Club history
Frosinone Calcio was founded as far back as 5 March 1906 under the name Unione Sportiva Frusinate, though the true start of the club’s competitive history is conventionally placed in 1928, the year the club officially affiliated with the Italian federation under a new name. The club’s colours, yellow and blue, gave rise to the nickname “Canarini”, the canaries, a name still used affectionately for the team today. Not only the nickname, also the role of third biggest footballing force in Lazio, behind AS Roma and SS Lazio, shapes the identity of this club from Ciociaria.
Since the club was taken over in 2003 by a group of entrepreneurs led by Maurizio Stirpe, whose father Benito would later give his name to the stadium, Frosinone has lived through the most successful period in its history. The first promotion to Serie A came in 2015-16 under head coach Roberto Stellone, though survival was not secured, and the club went straight back down after just one season in 18th place. Frosinone returned to the top flight a second time in 2018-19, before a third Serie A season followed in 2023-24 under head coach Eusebio Di Francesco, which also ended in relegation, this time in 18th place. Living through repeated promotions and relegations can be a bit of stressful for any set of supporters, but Frosinone finished the 2025-26 Serie B season under head coach Massimiliano Alvini, who had already worked briefly in Serie A with Cremonese, in 2nd place with 81 points, just one behind champions Venezia, and secured a return to Serie A with a 5-0 home win against Mantova on 8 May 2026, on the final matchday of the season, in front of their own crowd at the Stadio Benito Stirpe.
