Stadium information
Name:
Ruhrstadion
Capacity:
26,000
Address:
Castroper Straße 145, 44791 Bochum, Germany
Description:
The Ruhrstadion holds 26,000 spectators, made up of 14,400 seats and 11,600 standing places, after a recapping of the ground in 2022 brought capacity down from its previous 27,599. Not only does the stadium sit on a site that has hosted football since 1911, also its current floodlight system has been in place since 1977, following the original installation of 1972. The pitch itself has no running track, and away fans are housed on the western side of the ground with a dedicated entrance separate from the home sections. You will feel the atmosphere of more than a century of Ruhr-area football the moment you take seat in the compact, football-only Ruhrstadion.
Best way to travel to the Ruhrstadion
When you’ve booked your VfL Bochum tickets it’s time to find out how you can get to the stadium. Your match ticket includes free travel on VRR public transport, so most fans arrive without a car. These are the options you have to get to the ground.
By Public Transport
Tram lines 308 and 316 run directly from Bochum Hauptbahnhof to the “Ruhrstadion” stop, a journey of only around 3 minutes. Bochum Hauptbahnhof itself is well served by regional trains from Dortmund, Essen, Recklinghausen, Hagen and Düsseldorf.
By Car
Several car parks serve the ground: the Stadionring (2,000 spaces, a flat €5), the RuhrCongress car park (300 spaces, €1 per hour, limited availability on matchdays) and Kirmesplatz (660 spaces, a flat €4), with P1 to P4 reserved for VIP guests. There is also free, monitored bicycle parking on site.
By Bike
Cycling is a realistic option too, with free monitored bicycle parking available right at the stadium.
Ruhrstadion guide
The Ruhrstadion first opened in 1921 on a site that had already hosted VfL Bochum football since 1911, and it has been rebuilt repeatedly since, through a major reconstruction between 1976 and 1979, the conversion of the west curve to seating in 1997, the addition of the five-floor VfL Stadium Center in 2003 and a further renovation between 2009 and 2011. On the opposite side from the main stand sits the section most associated with the home support, but every stand plays its own part on a matchday in Bochum.
Ostkurve
The traditional home end and the loudest part of the Ruhrstadion, packed with standing supporters throughout the match.
Haupttribüne
The main stand offers covered seating with a clear view down the length of the pitch, home to the VfL Stadium Center complex.
Westkurve (away end)
Visiting supporters are housed on the western side of the ground, split between standing block E1 and seated blocks E2 and F, with a dedicated entrance kept separate from the home sections.
Gegengerade
The stand opposite the main tribune, offering a straightforward, good-value view of the action for home fans.
Which stand should you choose?
Not every stand gives you the same experience at the Ruhrstadion. We made this table so you can compare the options in one quick look. Check what matters to you and you will find the right stand.
| Priority | Best Stand | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Best atmosphere | Ostkurve | Standing terrace, the traditional home of Bochum’s loudest support |
| Best view | Haupttribüne Central | Covered seating, clear sightline along the length of the pitch |
| First-time visitor | Haupttribüne | Easy to find, good overview of the compact ground |
| Families with children | Gegengerade | Seated, calmer section away from the Ostkurve |
| Accessible seating | Haupttribüne | Accessible spaces available, ask our support team for the latest details |
| Budget-conscious | Ostkurve | Standing places, good value for a first Ruhrstadion visit |
| Premium comfort | Haupttribüne VIP | Home to the VfL Stadium Center, offering the best facilities in the ground |

Club history
VfL Bochum’s roots go back to 26 July 1848, with the football department founded on 31 January 1911 and the modern club taking shape through a merger on 14 April 1938. The club has never won the German championship, but reached the DFB-Pokal final twice, losing 1-4 to 1. FC Köln in 1967-68 and 0-1 to Eintracht Frankfurt in 1987-88. Also this club’s most celebrated era came in the late 1990s and early 2000s, with UEFA Cup campaigns in 1996-97 and 2003-04 off the back of fifth-place Bundesliga finishes, reaching the third round in 1997-98 before falling to Ajax.
VfL Bochum closed out the 2025-26 season in 9th place, their first full campaign back in the 2. Bundesliga after relegation from the Bundesliga was confirmed on 10 May 2025. Uwe Rösler took charge on 6 October 2025, succeeding Dieter Hecking, on a contract running through 2027, and has continued into the 2026-27 season with the team currently sitting 8th after five matchdays. Timo Horn was named captain ahead of the 2026-27 season, succeeding Matúš Bero, supported by vice-captain Philipp Hofmann.
German influences
The Ruhrstadion has stood on the same site in Bochum’s Castroper Straße since 1911, right in the heart of the industrial Ruhr area. The nickname “der VfL” ties Bochum to a proud working-class football tradition, a link the club still leans on proudly today. Come to a match at the Ruhrstadion and you will feel quite fast why this proud Ruhr club still means so much to Bochum.
VfL Bochum Honours & Trophies
VfL Bochum holds a trophy cabinet built more on European adventure than domestic silverware, with two DFB-Pokal final appearances and two UEFA Cup campaigns standing as the club’s proudest modern achievements, and the dramatic fight for survival that has defined recent seasons shows that fighting spirit is still very much alive. Regional fixtures
FC Schalke 04
The “kleines Revierderby”, or small Ruhr derby, against FC Schalke 04 is VfL Bochum’s fiercest regional rivalry, distinct from the bigger Schalke-Dortmund derby. The two clubs have met 79 times across all competitions, with Schalke holding the historic edge, but Bochum fans still fondly remember beating Schalke late in a Bundesliga season to cost their rivals the championship, a result still talked about in the Ruhr area today.
