Stadium information
Name:
Holstein-Stadion
Capacity:
11,700 (reduced, see below)
Address:
Westring 501, 24106 Kiel, Germany
Description:
The Holstein-Stadion currently holds around 11,700 spectators for league matches, made up of 4,414 seats and 7,286 standing places, after the club demolished its old Nordtribüne following the 2025-26 season as the first step of a wider modernisation, with the ground’s longer-term target capacity standing at 15,034 once the rebuild is complete. Not only does the stadium sit almost on top of the action, with the stands only around 8 metres from the touchline on a pitch with no running track, its Westtribüne alone still holds some 3,380 standing fans on its own. Blocks A to E are reserved for club partners and media rather than sold publicly, and wheelchair spaces are located on the Haupttribüne in Block G, with the club’s Inclusion Team on hand for any accessibility questions. You will feel the tight, old-school atmosphere the moment you take seat, closer to the pitch than at almost any other 2. Bundesliga ground.
Best way to travel to the Holstein-Stadion
When you’ve booked your Holstein Kiel tickets it’s time to find out how you can get to the stadium. Kiel’s public transport operator KVG runs a dedicated Stadion-Shuttle line, X91, straight to the ground on matchdays, so most fans arrive without a car. These are the options you have to get to the ground.
By Public Transport
The KVG Stadion-Shuttle X91 runs directly to the Holstein-Stadion on every home matchday, and the club’s own matchday information points fans towards public transport as the most reliable way in, with a combined transport-and-match ticket option available.
By Car
Several official car parks serve the ground: P1 Rot on Nikola-Tesla-Straße (583 spaces, €5, free within the first 2 hours, about a 13-minute walk), P2 Grün at the RBZ (150 spaces, €5, the closest at around 550 metres), and P3 Orange near the Lubinus clinic (100 spaces, €5, roughly 15 minutes away), with a further free lot on Leibnizstraße that also serves as a shuttle point for away fans. The flat €5 rate typically covers from two hours before kick-off to two hours after.
By Bike
Cycling is a realistic option too, with the club’s own matchday guide flagging it alongside public transport for fans coming from within the city.
Holstein-Stadion guide
The Holstein-Stadion first opened in 1911 and has been rebuilt in stages ever since, through renovations in the 1920s, the 1950s, the 1970s and a long run of upgrades from 2004 onward that pushed capacity toward 15,000 after the club’s 2017 return to the 2. Bundesliga. On the opposite side from the main stand sits the section most associated with the home support, but every stand plays its own part on a matchday in Kiel.
Westtribüne
Holding some 3,380 fans on standing terraces, the Westtribüne is the traditional heart of Kiel’s home atmosphere, close enough to the pitch that every tackle feels personal.
Haupttribüne
Home to the ground’s wheelchair-accessible Block G, the main stand offers covered seating with a clear view along the length of the pitch.
Nordtribüne (under reconstruction)
The former north stand was demolished after the 2025-26 season as the first phase of a modernisation project, and its eventual replacement will help take the Holstein-Stadion back toward its 15,034 target capacity.
Away section
Visiting supporters are housed in a dedicated away block, with a free shuttle-served car park on Leibnizstraße set up specifically to serve travelling fans.
Which stand should you choose?
Not every stand gives you the same experience at the Holstein-Stadion. We made this table so you can compare the options in one quick look. Check what matters to you and you will find the right stand.
| Priority | Best Stand | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Best atmosphere | Westtribüne | Standing terrace, the traditional home of Kiel’s loudest support, right on top of the pitch |
| Best view | Haupttribüne Central | Covered seating, clear sightline along the length of the pitch |
| First-time visitor | Haupttribüne | Easy to find, good overview of the compact ground |
| Families with children | Haupttribüne Upper | Seated, calmer section away from the Westtribüne |
| Accessible seating | Haupttribüne Block G | Dedicated wheelchair spaces, supported by the club’s Inclusion Team |
| Budget-conscious | Westtribüne | Standing places, good value for a first Holstein-Stadion visit |
| Premium comfort | Haupttribüne VIP | Blocks A-E reserved for club partners offer the best facilities in the ground |

Club history
Holstein Kiel was founded on 7 October 1900, strengthened by a 1917 merger with another local club, and its golden years came early, with a German football championship in 1912 and runners-up finishes in 1910 and 1930 during the old regional-amateur era. The club reached the DFB-Pokal semi-finals in both 1941 and 2020-21, the latter run including a famous win over Bayern Munich, and added a quarter-final appearance in 2011-12. After decades bouncing through the lower German leagues, Kiel returned to the 2. Bundesliga in 2017 and reached the Bundesliga for the very first time in the club’s history in 2024 as 2. Bundesliga runners-up, before being relegated straight back down after a single season in the top flight.
Holstein Kiel closed out the 2025-26 season in 12th place in the 2. Bundesliga. Tim Walter returned to the club on 24 February 2026, in his second spell in charge after previously coaching Kiel in 2018-19, steering the team away from the relegation zone with a strong late-season run and earning a contract extension on 30 May 2026 to continue into 2026-27. Steven Skrzybski has captained the side since being named team leader in July 2025, supported by vice-captains Alexander Bernhardsson, Carl Johansson and Stefan Schwab.
German influences
The Holstein-Stadion has stood on the same site in Kiel since 1911 and still keeps its stands unusually close to the pitch, a layout that goes back to the ground’s earliest years. The nickname “die Störche”, or “the storks”, ties Holstein Kiel to more than 120 years of football in Schleswig-Holstein, a link the club still leans on proudly today. Come to a match at the Holstein-Stadion and you will feel quite fast why this proud northern German club still means so much to Kiel.
Holstein Kiel Honours & Trophies
Holstein Kiel holds one of the more unusual trophy cabinets in German football, built on an early-20th-century national championship and a historic run to the Bundesliga for the very first time in 2024, and the club’s determined fight for stability in recent seasons shows that ambition is still very much alive. Regional fixtures
VfB Lübeck
The Schleswig-Holstein derby against VfB Lübeck is Kiel’s oldest and fiercest rivalry, dating back to their first meeting in 1919 and now stretching past 100 competitive matches between the two biggest clubs in the state. Whenever both clubs share a division, or meet in regional cup competition, the derby remains one of the most keenly followed fixtures on Kiel’s calendar.
