Stadium information
Name:
Fritz-Walter-Stadion
Capacity:
49,327
Address:
Fritz-Walter-Straße 1, 67663 Kaiserslautern, Germany
Description:
The Fritz-Walter-Stadion has stood on top of the Betzenberg hill since 1920, which is exactly why every local supporter simply calls it “der Betze” rather than using its full name. The ground was renamed in 1985 in honour of Fritz Walter, the club’s former captain and a member of West Germany’s 1954 World Cup-winning “Miracle of Bern” team. Between 2002 and 2006, the stadium went through a €76.5 million rebuild to host matches at the 2006 World Cup, which lifted capacity from 38,500 to almost 50,000. Not only did this expansion modernise every stand, also it added the executive boxes and media facilities the ground still uses today. The current capacity for league matches stands at 49,327, reduced slightly since April 2023 for safety reasons. The record attendance remains 50,754, set on 6 May 2006 for a 1-1 draw against Bayern München, and you will feel echoes of that history the moment you take seat on the hillside.
Best way to travel to the Fritz-Walter-Stadion
When you’ve booked your 1. FC Kaiserslautern tickets it’s time to find out how you can get to the stadium. The Fritz-Walter-Stadion is located at Fritz-Walter-Straße 1, right on the Betzenberg hill above the city. These are the options you have to get to the ground.
By Bus
Local bus services run up the hill from the city centre on matchday, and a valid matchday ticket also works as your ticket on VRN buses and trains across the whole region, from three hours before kick-off until 3am the following night. Most travelling fans take advantage of this rather than driving in.
By Car
Parking directly around the Fritz-Walter-Stadion is very limited, and the residential streets nearby are reserved for local permit holders only on matchday. The city instead runs a Park&Ride shuttle service from car parks further out, and taking this shuttle is by far the easier option than trying to find a space near the hill itself.
By Train
Kaiserslautern Hauptbahnhof is only a few minutes’ walk from the foot of the Betzenberg, making the train easily the simplest way to arrive for supporters coming from Mannheim, Saarbrücken or further afield. From the station, the walk up to the stadium takes some effort given the hill, but it is well signposted throughout.
Fritz-Walter-Stadion guide
The Fritz-Walter-Stadion has four stands built and rebuilt at different points since 1920, so the ground still carries a slightly different character on each side despite the World Cup renovation. On the opposite site from the main stand sits the section most associated with the club’s identity, but every stand plays its own part on a matchday at the Betze.
Westkurve
The Westkurve is the largest stand and the traditional home of Kaiserslautern’s loudest supporters, combining standing terraces with a smaller seated upper tier. This is where the atmosphere is created before kick-off and sustained for the full 90 minutes, and you will feel the noise long before you see the pitch from the stairs behind it.
Nordtribüne
Fully seated and running along one side of the pitch, the Nordtribüne offers a calmer, more central view of the action and is popular with season-ticket holders who want a consistent seat rather than the terrace experience.
Südtribüne
Opposite the Nordtribüne, the Südtribüne is also fully seated and includes dedicated wheelchair spaces in front of the lower tier, making it the usual recommendation for supporters who need step-free access.
Osttribüne
The Osttribüne combines both seating and standing areas and is typically where away supporters are housed, with a clear, elevated view back across the pitch towards the Westkurve.
Which stand should you choose?
Not every stand gives you the same experience at the Fritz-Walter-Stadion. We made this table so you can compare the options in one quick look. Check what matters to you and you will find the right stand.
| Priority | Best Stand | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Best atmosphere | Westkurve | Standing terrace, the loudest and most traditional home support on the Betze |
| Best view | Nordtribüne Central | Fully seated, central sightline along one side of the pitch |
| First-time visitor | Nordtribüne | Easy to find, seated and comfortable, good overview of the whole ground |
| Families with children | Südtribüne Upper | Seated, calmer part of the ground, away from the standing terraces |
| Accessible seating | Südtribüne | Dedicated wheelchair spaces in front of the lower tier |
| Budget-conscious | Osttribüne | Mix of standing and seated areas, good value for a first Betze visit |
| Premium comfort | Nordtribüne VIP | Executive boxes and media-level hospitality |

Club history
1. FC Kaiserslautern is one of the most decorated names in German football, with four national championships to its name: 1951, 1953, 1991 and 1997-98, the last of these still the only time in Bundesliga history a club has won the title immediately after being promoted, achieved under manager Otto Rehhagel. The club also won the DFB-Pokal twice, in 1990 and 1996, and reached the Champions League quarter-finals in 1999. None of that history prevented a first-ever relegation to the 3. Liga in 2017-18, a genuine shock for a club of this size. Kaiserslautern fought its way back to the 2. Bundesliga in 2022-23 and, the following season, went all the way to the DFB-Pokal final, beating 1. FC Saarbrücken 2-0 away in the semi-final on 2 April 2024 through goals from captain Marlon Ritter and Almamy Touré. The final itself, on 25 May 2024, ended in a 0-1 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen, completing Leverkusen’s unbeaten double season.
The 2025-26 season saw Kaiserslautern finish 6th in the 2. Bundesliga while setting a new club average home attendance record of 46,717, a remarkable figure for a second-tier side and proof of how much support the Betze still commands. Torsten Lieberknecht took over as head coach in April 2025 and has built on that momentum since.
German influences
The stadium’s namesake, Fritz Walter, remains one of the most important figures in German football history: club captain, West Germany captain, and the man whose name was given to the stadium in 1985 in recognition of his role in the 1954 “Miracle of Bern” World Cup win. The club’s red and white colours and the Betzenberg hillside setting have made the ground one of the most recognisable in the country, and its record attendance of 50,754 during the 2006 World Cup renovation era still stands as a symbol of how big this club has been. Come to the Fritz-Walter-Stadion for a match and you will feel quite fast why this ground has hosted five World Cup fixtures and a Women’s Euro final.
1. FC Kaiserslautern Honours & Trophies
1. FC Kaiserslautern has one of the biggest trophy cabinets outside the traditional Bundesliga giants, and that is exactly what makes the club’s recent second-tier years feel unusual to older fans. Reaching a DFB-Pokal final as recently as 2024 showed the pedigree is still there, even after the fall to the 3. Liga in 2017-18. Cheap and premium 1. FC Kaiserslautern football tickets for the 2. Bundesliga are available to buy now at LiveFootballTickets.com.

1. FC Saarbrücken
The Südwest-Derby against 1. FC Saarbrücken is Kaiserslautern’s most heated rivalry, rooted in the geographic and cultural closeness between the Palatinate and the Saarland. The most recent big meeting between the two came in the 2023-24 DFB-Pokal semi-final, when Kaiserslautern won 2-0 away at Saarbrücken’s Ludwigsparkstadion on 2 April 2024, with captain Marlon Ritter opening the scoring in the 53rd minute before Almamy Touré added a second in the 75th, sending Kaiserslautern through to the final in Berlin.
