Stadium information
Name:
Merck-Stadion am Böllenfalltor
Capacity:
17,810
Address:
Nieder-Ramstädter Straße 170, 64285 Darmstadt, Germany
Description:
The Böllenfalltor holds 17,810 spectators for league matches, split between roughly 6,348 seats and 11,462 standing places across four stands, and takes its name from the historic poplar trees, the “Böllen”, that once marked the old city gate nearby. Not only does the Haupttribüne carry the stadium’s business areas and boxes, also 94 wheelchair spaces are built into the main stand, with a further 3 in the away section. Club-owned since the end of 2017, the ground has been rebuilt in stages between 2014 and 2023, and the site also carries three training pitches behind the stands. You will find the atmosphere close and intense here, one of the smallest grounds in German professional football, and you will feel it the moment you take seat.
Best way to travel to the Merck-Stadion
When you’ve booked your SV Darmstadt 98 tickets it’s time to find out how you can get to the stadium. The Merck-Stadion sits along the Nieder-Ramstädter Straße on the edge of the city. These are the options you have to get to the ground.
By Train
Tram lines 2 and 9 stop directly at the “Merck-Stadion” stop, running every 7.5 minutes from around two hours before kick-off between “Berliner Allee” and “Böllenfalltor”. Your matchday ticket doubles as a valid ticket across the entire RMV public transport network, so most fans take advantage of this rather than driving in.
By Car
There is no dedicated stadium parking, so most fans use the car parks near Darmstadt Hauptbahnhof, at the Westsite, or at the Darmstadium and Luisencenter, with free parking also available at Nordbad. Nieder-Ramstädter Straße near the “Steinberg/Stadion” stop is closed to traffic for about 90 minutes after the final whistle.
By Bike
Plenty of local fans simply cycle in along the Nieder-Ramstädter Straße, and the VOBA-Bikepark next to the ground offers secure bike parking on matchday.
Merck-Stadion guide
The Böllenfalltor is split into four stands, and with barely 18,000 seats in total the crowd feels closer to the pitch here than at almost any other ground in the 2. Bundesliga. On the opposite side from the main stand sits the section most associated with the home support, but every stand plays its own part on a matchday in Darmstadt.
Südtribüne
The Südtribüne is a fully standing terrace with room for 3,600 fans, and this is where the loudest Darmstadt support gathers, with songs that start well before kick-off and rarely let up for the full 90 minutes.
Haupttribüne
Fully seated with 2,982 places, the Haupttribüne includes the stadium’s business seats, boxes and media positions, giving the calmest and most comfortable view of the action.
Nordtribüne
Fully seated with 2,792 places, the Nordtribüne sits opposite the Südtribüne and offers a clear view down the length of the pitch at a lower price point than the Haupttribüne.
Gegengerade
The largest stand in the ground at 6,730 capacity, split between 4,670 standing and 2,060 seated places, the Gegengerade runs alongside the pitch and gives a good overview of the whole ground.
Away section
Visiting supporters are housed in a dedicated Gästeblock with room for 1,706 fans, split between 862 standing and 841 seated places plus 3 wheelchair spaces, with further away allocation available on the main stand under a 10% rule.
Which stand should you choose?
Not every stand gives you the same experience at the Böllenfalltor. We made this table so you can compare the options in one quick look. Check what matters to you and you will find the right stand.
| Priority | Best Stand | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Best atmosphere | Südtribüne | Standing terrace, the loudest and most traditional home support in Darmstadt |
| Best view | Haupttribüne Central | Fully seated, central sightline along the length of the pitch |

| Families with children | Nordtribüne | Fully seated, calmer part of the ground, away from the standing terraces |
| Accessible seating | Haupttribüne | Part of the stadium’s 94 wheelchair spaces built into the main stand |
| Budget-conscious | Gegengerade Standing | Standing places, good value for a first Böllenfalltor visit |
| Premium comfort | Haupttribüne VIP | Business seats and boxes with the best hospitality in the ground |

Club history
SV Darmstadt 98 traces its roots to 1898, when the club was founded as FC Olympia Darmstadt before merging into its current form in 1919. Known to every fan simply as “die Lilien”, Darmstadt has spent most of its history well away from the German top flight, making its Bundesliga seasons all the more cherished: 1978-79, 1981-82, and then a long-awaited return in 2015-16 and 2016-17 after 33 years away, followed by a fourth top-flight campaign in 2023-24 after automatic promotion in 2022-23 sealed with a 1-0 win over 1. FC Magdeburg. Each of those Bundesliga spells has ended in relegation, most recently after just three league wins in 2023-24, but the club has bounced straight back into promotion contention every time. Darmstadt has also won the Hessenpokal five times, in 1999, 2001, 2006, 2007 and 2008, and reached the DFB-Pokal quarter-finals in 1986.
The 2025-26 season saw Darmstadt finish 5th in the 2. Bundesliga, keeping the club firmly in the promotion mix. Florian Kohfeldt, appointed head coach in September 2024 and rewarded with a contract extension in 2026, has built his side around goalkeeper and captain Marcel Schuhen.
German influences
The Böllenfalltor takes its name from the old poplar trees, the “Böllen”, that once stood by a city gate on this site, a piece of local history that has stuck to the ground through a century of rebuilds. Darmstadt itself became SV Darmstadt 98 in 1919 through a merger of local clubs, and the Lilien crest has represented the city’s football identity ever since. Come to a match at the Böllenfalltor and you will feel quite fast why this small, intimate ground still means so much to South Hesse.
