History of the Bundesliga
The Bundesliga was founded on 28 July 1962. The first season began in August 1963. The very first Bundesliga match was played on 24 August 1963: Borussia Dortmund beat Werder Bremen 3:2, and Friedhelm Konietzka scored the first ever goal in Bundesliga history, just 58 seconds after kick-off. Before the Bundesliga was formed, there was no unified national league in Germany. Only regional Oberliga divisions existed, with their champions meeting in a playoff to decide the German champion each year. Not only a new league system was created in 1963, also a new era of German football began.
The record champions of the Bundesliga are FC Bayern München. Nobody has won more titles. From 2013 to 2023, Bayern won twelve consecutive championships, a period of dominance without parallel in any other major European league. Borussia Dortmund were the only serious challengers during that time, with titles in 2011 and 2012. Then in the 2023-24 season, Bayer 04 Leverkusen made history. Under manager Xabi Alonso, Leverkusen won their first ever Bundesliga title. Not only winning it was historic, also the fact that Leverkusen went the entire league season without a single defeat made this title one of the most memorable moments in German football. That is what makes this season so special. You will not see anything like it in Bundesliga history again for a long time.
A very special feature of the Bundesliga is the 50+1 rule. This rule states that outside investors may never hold more than 49% of voting rights in a Bundesliga club. The majority always stays with the registered association, meaning the club’s members. No single investor can take full control of a German Bundesliga club. That is what makes the Bundesliga so fan-friendly compared to other European leagues. Not only the democratic club structure protects supporters, also the ticket prices in the Bundesliga are significantly lower than in the English Premier League on average. The Bundesliga is consistently the best-attended professional football league in the world.
The Bundesliga today
The Bundesliga in the 2026-2027 season consists of 18 clubs competing across 34 matchdays. The three lowest-placed clubs are relegated to the 2. Bundesliga, and the team in 16th place enters a promotion playoff against the third-placed club from the 2. Bundesliga. Also internationally the Bundesliga is well represented. Not only the champions qualify for the Champions League, also the second and third-placed clubs compete in the Europa League or Conference League.
The big derbies of the Bundesliga
Der Klassiker: FC Bayern München vs Borussia Dortmund
Der Klassiker between Bayern and BVB is the most famous rivalry in the Bundesliga. When Germany’s two biggest clubs meet, the whole country stops. Not only in Germany, also in Spain, England and the United States millions of viewers tune in when Bayern play BVB. Bayern is the record champion. BVB is the club with the loudest fan culture in the country, with the Yellow Wall behind them. The Signal Iduna Park on a Klassiker matchday is one of the most impressive sporting experiences Europe has to offer. You will not forget the atmosphere there any time soon.
The Revierderby: Borussia Dortmund vs FC Schalke 04
The Revierderby between Borussia Dortmund and FC Schalke 04 is the most intense local derby in German football. Both clubs are just around 30 kilometres apart, right in the middle of the Ruhrgebiet, one of the most densely populated industrial regions in Europe. The dislike between the fans runs deep and has built up over generations. The derby has roots that go back to the first half of the twentieth century, when coal mining and steel production shaped life in the Revier and every town had its own club. When Dortmund and Schalke meet, it is not only a football match. Also local pride, family history and regional identity are at stake.
The Rhein-Derby: 1. FC Köln vs Bayer 04 Leverkusen
The Rhein-Derby between 1. FC Köln and Bayer 04 Leverkusen is one of the most passionate regional derbies in the Bundesliga. Both clubs come from the Rhine region and are just around 25 kilometres apart. Köln fans have always viewed the chemical company Bayer as something artificial in football. Leverkusen fans particularly enjoyed finishing the 2023-24 season as fresh champions while leaving Köln behind them. The derby is not as well known as the Revierderby, but it is contested by fans on both sides with enormous intensity. Also the atmosphere at the RheinEnergieStadion or the BayArena on a derby day is something special.
The Nordderby: Hamburger SV vs Werder Bremen
The Nordderby between Hamburger SV and Werder Bremen is one of the oldest rivalries in German football, with roots going back over 60 years. Both clubs are founding members of the Bundesliga. Hamburg were the only club never to have been relegated from the founding season 1963-64 all the way until 2018. Bremen won the championship and the DFB-Pokal several times in the 2000s. Not only the shared history makes this derby special, also the northern German rivalry between the two biggest football cities in the north plays its part. When both clubs are in the same division, the Nordderby is one of the most emotional matches of the season.
