The Unipol Domus, known until 2021 as the Sardegna Arena, has been Cagliari Calcio’s home since the 2017-18 season. It was built as a temporary solution in under four months, for only around €8 million, after the demolition of the old Stadio Sant’Elia, Cagliari’s home from 1970 to 2017 and a 1990 World Cup venue, where all of England’s group matches were played. In 2018, the Unipol Domus was expanded with two extra corner stands on the west side. Not only its compact design, also its closeness to the sea, only a few hundred metres away, makes a matchday at the Unipol Domus something special. You will feel just how close you are to the pitch the moment you take your seat for the first time.
The Curva Nord, at the north end of the stadium, is home to Cagliari’s most loyal supporters, while away fans are traditionally placed in a separate section of the Curva Sud. By Train

Also from Cagliari-Elmas Airport, a direct rail link reaches the central station in only around 5 to 10 minutes. By Bus
Several CTM city bus lines connect central Cagliari to the area around the Unipol Domus, with stops just a few minutes’ walk from the main entrances. The trip from the city centre takes only a few minutes, depending on traffic. Cagliari is a surprisingly bike-friendly city thanks to the promenade along Poetto beach, and the ride from the historic centre to the Unipol Domus takes only 15 to 20 minutes along the coast. By Car
Cagliari is well connected via the SS 195 road and the Tangenziale di Cagliari, which link the city to the rest of the island. From the city centre, the stadium is around 3 kilometres away, a drive of only a few minutes outside peak hours. Coming from Cagliari-Elmas Airport, follow the signs towards the city centre and then the Unipol Domus, a trip of around 15 minutes. You will find paid parking in the areas near the stadium, though capacity is limited. After the final whistle, leaving the area can be a bit of stressful. Not only around the stadium itself, also on the coastal approach roads, traffic can stay heavy for a while after a big match. Those who arrive early get a better choice of parking, and also an easier way out afterwards.
The stands at the Unipol Domus
The Unipol Domus is split into four main areas: the Curva Nord, the Curva Sud, the Tribuna Est and the Tribuna Ovest. On Cagliari home matchdays, the Curva Nord is the fans’ own end, while away fans are placed in a separate section of the Curva Sud. You will never get the feeling of watching from far away, whatever stand you are in, since the stadium’s compact design keeps even the furthest seats close to the action. Curva Nord

Tribuna Est
The Tribuna Est runs along one side of the pitch, very close to the grass and with a direct view of the halfway line. From here you get one of the best sightlines in the whole stadium, right by the action and the dugouts. Tribuna Ovest

Club history
Cagliari Calcio was founded in 1920 in Sardinia and remains, to this day, the island’s only major football club, a club that represents not just a city but an entire region. The club’s colours, Rossoblù, red and blue, fill the whole city on matchdays, and the club crest carries the Sardinian flag with the Quattro Mori, the four Moors’ heads, a symbol that reaches far beyond football for the whole island. Not only the crest, also the club’s one and only Scudetto makes Cagliari one of the most important names in island and southern Italian football.
In the 1969-70 season, Cagliari, led by Gigi Riva, won the only league title in the club’s history, secured with two matches still to play. Riva, still by far the top scorer in the history of the Italian national team alongside Sergio “Bobo” Gori, went on to become the club’s greatest legend, and his statue still stands in front of the stadium today. Also outside Italy, Cagliari drew international attention at the time, a small island club bringing the biggest names in Italian football to their knees. Not only the title itself, also the way a whole island rallied behind this team made 1969-70 a peak that remains unmatched to this day.
The club’s best European result came in the 1993-94 season, when Cagliari reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup, before losing to eventual winners Inter Milan. The 2025-26 season, under head coach Fabio Pisacane, promoted on 6 June 2025 from the club’s Primavera side and successor to Davide Nicola, ended with survival secured in 14th place, capped by a 2-1 away win at the San Siro against AC Milan on the final matchday, 24 May 2026, a result that cost Milan their direct Champions League spot. Pisacane had led Cagliari’s Primavera side, only weeks earlier on 9 April 2025, to a Coppa Italia Primavera final win over AC Milan, a success that opened the door to the first team directly. Staying up triggered the automatic extension clause in his contract, so Pisacane remains head coach for 2026-27 too.

The Derby della Sardegna against Torres
The most traditional rivalry in Cagliari’s world is the Derby della Sardegna against Torres 1903 of Sassari, named after the whole island the two clubs represent. It is one of the most geographically distant derbies in Italy, since Cagliari sits in the south and Torres in the north of Sardinia, which does nothing to make the rivalry any less intense. Not only the geographical distance, also each club’s status as the biggest club in the south and north of the island respectively gives this fixture its particular intensity. Fully understanding this rivalry from the outside can be a bit of stressful, given how deep the feelings run on both sides of the island.
Since Torres and Cagliari rarely play in the same division, there are currently no direct meetings in Serie A, but the Derby della Sardegna stays very much alive, with real passion, at every possible opportunity, whether in the Coppa Italia or in the lower divisions.
