The Stadio Olimpico, sitting inside the Foro Italico sports complex north of Rome, has been the shared home of AS Roma and city rivals Lazio since 1953. It holds 70.634 spectators across two tiers, making it the second largest stadium in Italy behind only the San Siro. Roma have been pushing for their own stadium for a long time, and in early 2026 Rome’s city council approved plans for a new 60.605-seat ground in Pietralata, though the club is targeting 2030 for delivery. The stadium opened in 1953, built on the site of the former Stadio Nazionale del PNF for the 1960 Rome Olympics, which is where its name comes from. Best way to travel to the Stadio Olimpico

By Train

Rome is served by two big long-distance stations, Roma Termini and Roma Tiburtina, both well connected to the rest of Italy and beyond. High-speed Frecciarossa and Italo services get you here from Milan, Turin, Florence and Naples in as little as three hours, and international connections arrive from all across Europe into Termini. From Roma Termini, take bus line 32 or tram 2 towards Piazza Mancini, from where it is only a short walk to the stadium. From Roma Tiburtina, a taxi or a connecting bus is the more comfortable option. Also from Fiumicino Airport, the Leonardo Express gets you into Termini in around 32 minutes, from where the matchday connections continue. Not just the train, regional services also stop within reasonable distance of the Foro Italico on matchdays.

By Bus

From the city centre, ATAC bus line 32 and tram 2 both serve the area around the Stadio Olimpico, with stops just a short walk from the main entrances. Extra services are added on matchdays, not only towards the stadium before kick-off, but also back into town after the final whistle. The trip from central Rome takes roughly 20 to 30 minutes, depending on traffic and the route taken. Also on the biggest Serie A matchdays, when the ground is close to sold out, you will find the buses and trams heading back very crowded right after the final whistle. Build in a bit of extra time for that.

By Bicycle

Rome is a hillier city than some others, but a growing network of cycle paths along the Tiber makes the ride from the city centre out to the Stadio Olimpico doable in about 30 to 40 minutes. You’ll find bicycle parking near the Foro Italico entrance. Not only do you dodge all the matchday traffic this way, the ride back into town afterwards, along the river past the Ponte Milvio, is also a genuinely nice way to end the evening. Most fans who try it once come back to it the next time round. Also for a first-timer who doesn’t know Roman traffic well, this option can end up feeling like the simplest of them all.

By Car

Rome is well connected via the A90 ring road (the Grande Raccordo Anulare) and the Lungotevere road network along the Tiber, both of which feed into the streets around the Foro Italico. From the city centre, the stadium sits around 5 kilometres away via Viale delle Belle Arti, roughly a 20 to 25 minute drive outside peak hours. Those coming from Florence or Naples take the A1 straight towards the ring road and follow signs for the Foro Italico. You’ll find paid parking in the areas around the ground, and stewards help direct traffic near the stadium on matchdays. Getting out of the area can be a bit slow after the final whistle. Not only around the stadium itself, the Lungotevere can also get heavy with traffic for a while after a big match. Those who arrive early get a better choice of parking, and also an easier way out afterwards.

The stands at the Stadio Olimpico

The Stadio Olimpico is split into four main areas: the Curva Sud, the Curva Nord, the Tribuna Tevere and the Tribuna Monte Mario. Each section has its own character, and which end counts as home or away depends on whether it’s AS Roma or Lazio hosting. Wherever you’re sitting, you’ll never feel like you’re watching from a distance, since the shape of the stadium’s bowl brings even the furthest seats close to the pitch. Curva Sud

The view from up here is high but complete, and you will see the whole pitch laid out below you. Tribuna Tevere

The Tribuna Tevere, named after the nearby river Tiber, runs along one side of the pitch and includes the players’ tunnel and the technical areas. From here you have a clear, side-on view of the whole pitch across two tiers, and this is where most of the hospitality and premium seating is found. Tickets here are usually the most expensive in the ground. A good choice if you want to take seat close to the benches, with a full view of the action from the halfway line. You will feel closer to the coaching staff than in almost any other stand.

Tribuna Monte Mario

Directly across from the Tribuna Tevere sits the Tribuna Monte Mario, named after the hill overlooking the stadium, and a popular choice for families and first-time visitors. From here you get a very good view over everything that happens on the pitch, spread across the same two tiers as the Tevere side. Tickets in the Tribuna Monte Mario are a bit more affordable than the Tevere side, while the view is nearly identical. Club history

AS Roma was founded on 22 July 1927 through the merger of three older Roman clubs, Roman FC, SC Alba-Audace and Fortitudo Pro Roma, a project driven by Italo Foschi to give the capital a single club strong enough to compete with the big teams from the north. Not only did the club come out of a merger, also its colours, giallorosso, the red and yellow, were taken directly from the coat of arms of the city of Rome itself. Within fifteen years the young club had already won its first Scudetto, in 1941-42, and Roma went on to become one of the great historic institutions of Italian football. Also this is a piece of football history few other clubs anywhere in the world can claim, however hard some of them have tried.

AS Roma have won 3 Serie A titles, in 1941-42, 1982-83 and 2000-01, along with 9 Coppa Italia titles and, more recently, the 2022 UEFA Europa Conference League, the club’s first ever European trophy, won under José Mourinho through a 1-0 final win over Feyenoord thanks to a Nicolò Zaniolo goal. Roma also reached the 2023 UEFA Europa League final, lost on penalties to Sevilla. The title-winning 1982-83 side, built around Brazilian playmaker Falcão and captain Agostino Di Bartolomei, is still remembered as one of the greatest teams the club has ever produced.
