The 2026-2027 Europa League format
The Europa League is the second tier of European club soccer, below the Champions League, and it has used a league phase format since the 2024-2025 season.
Thirty-six clubs compete in a single league table. Each side plays eight different opponents, four at home and four away, rather than the six matches in a group of four that the old format produced. The top eight in the final standings qualify directly for the round of 16. The clubs finishing ninth to 24th enter a two-legged knockout play-off for the remaining places, and everyone from 25th down is eliminated.
From the round of 16 onwards the competition is straight knockout soccer over two legs, until the one-off final. The winners qualify automatically for the following season's Champions League league phase, which makes the Europa League the shortest route into Europe's premier competition and explains why every participating club takes it seriously.

The final takes place on Wednesday, May 26, 2027 at the Waldstadion in Frankfurt, Germany, known commercially as Deutsche Bank Park. The ground holds around 50,000 for European matches and is the home of Eintracht Frankfurt, themselves two-time winners of this competition in 1980 and 2022.
The stadium has staged matches at three World Cups and five games at the European Championship in 2024, and Frankfurt is one of the easiest cities in Europe to reach thanks to its major international airport and central rail connections. The 2026 final: Aston Villa 3-0 SC Freiburg
Aston Villa ended a thirty-year wait for a major trophy in Istanbul on May 20, 2026, beating SC Freiburg 3-0 at the Beşiktaş Stadium. Youri Tielemans opened the scoring from a worked corner routine, and Villa pulled clear in the second half. Emiliano Buendía was named man of the match.
For Freiburg it was a first continental final in the club's history. For Villa manager Unai Emery, it was a record-extending fifth title in this competition, after three consecutive wins with Sevilla between 2014 and 2016 and one with Villarreal in 2021. Villa also became the second English club in two seasons to lift the trophy, following Tottenham Hotspur's win over Manchester United in Bilbao in 2025.
Wins and trophies
Sevilla are by some distance the most successful club in the competition's history, with seven titles. Juventus, Inter Milan, Liverpool, Atletico Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur are next with three each. Benfica are probably the most frustrated club in the tournament's history: they reached the final in 1983, 2013 and 2014 without ever winning it, coming closest in 2014 when they lost on penalties after extra time.

History
The competition traces its roots to 1955 and the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, played between 1955 and 1971, which grew from eleven clubs to 64 by 1970-71. European soccer's governing body took the tournament over and relaunched it the following season under a new name.
The first final of that new era was an all-English affair between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Tottenham Hotspur, with Spurs taking the honor of winning it in 1972. The trophy stayed in England a year later when Liverpool beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 3-2 on aggregate. A third consecutive English win was denied in 1974, when Tottenham lost the final to Feyenoord.
The Cup Winners' Cup was merged into the competition in 1999, and the Intertoto Cup followed in 2009, which prompted the rebrand to the Europa League. Until 1997 the final was played over two legs, after which it moved to a single match at a neutral venue. Only two clubs have ever retained the title, both Spanish: Real Madrid in 1985 and 1986, and Sevilla, who went one better with three consecutive wins in 2014, 2015 and 2016 after also retaining their 2006 title in 2007.
Player records
The Europa League may be Europe's second competition, but plenty of the biggest names in the game have made their mark on it. Swedish striker Henrik Larsson is the tournament's all-time leading scorer, with Radamel Falcao and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar among the closest challengers. Jupp Heynckes has the best strike rate of any of the leading scorers, with 23 goals in 21 appearances.
Giuseppe Bergomi holds the record for most appearances with 96 games, ahead of Frank Rost on 87 and Walter Zenga on 69.
The most exciting final ever played: Liverpool v Deportivo Alaves
The 2001 final in Dortmund remains the wildest the competition has produced. Liverpool arrived at the Westfalenstadion as clear favorites, having eliminated Barcelona in the semifinals, and faced a Deportivo Alaves side who had finished six places below the Catalans in the Spanish league that season. Liverpool fielded Steven Gerrard, Michael Owen and Jamie Carragher; Alaves had Jordi Cruyff, son of Johan.
Markus Babbel put Liverpool ahead inside four minutes and Gerrard made it 2-0 shortly after. Ivan Alonso pulled one back before Gary McAllister restored the two-goal lead from the penalty spot just before halftime. Alaves came out transformed: Javi Moreno scored twice in the opening minutes of the second half to level the match at 3-3. Robbie Fowler looked to have settled it with the seventh goal of the night, only for Jordi Cruyff to equalize near the end and force extra time, where an unfortunate own goal from Delfi Geli finally decided it in Liverpool's favor.
