Earlier in the season Brighton had completed the double with a dramatic comeback at Stamford Bridge, winning 3-1 against ten-man Chelsea after Trevoh Chalobah's red card, with Danny Welbeck scoring twice and Maxim De Cuyper also on target. Welbeck has been remarkably effective against Chelsea, involved in more goals against the Blues than against any other opponent during his time at Brighton.

It proved a turbulent campaign for Chelsea. Enzo Maresca had won the Club World Cup and the Conference League — making the Blues the first club to win all of European football's major club competitions — but was dismissed in January 2026, with Liam Rosenior taking interim charge before he too was let go. Chelsea ultimately finished outside the European places and have since turned to Xabi Alonso, the former Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen coach, who takes charge for 2026-2027 on a four-year contract. Despite the upheaval, the squad retains plenty of quality, with the likes of Cole Palmer, Enzo Fernández and Moisés Caicedo at its core.
