How the Europa League play-offs work
There are two separate play-off stages in the competition. The first comes at the end of qualifying, in late August: clubs that have come through the earlier qualifying rounds meet over two legs, and the winners take the last places in the league phase while the losers move across to the Conference League.
The second is the knockout phase play-off in February. After the league phase, in which 36 clubs each play eight games in a single table, the top eight go straight to the round of 16. The clubs finishing ninth through twenty-fourth enter the play-off round, again over two legs, with the higher-ranked sides seeded and playing the return at home. The eight winners join the top eight in the round of 16, and everyone else is out.
