How the Copa Libertadores works
The tournament runs across most of the calendar year, opening with qualifying rounds before a group stage of thirty-two clubs split into eight groups of four. Each club plays six games, three at home and three away. The top two in every group reach the round of 16, while the third-placed clubs move across to the continent's secondary competition rather than exiting altogether. From the round of 16 the ties are two-legged, home and away, with the aggregate score deciding who advances and a penalty shootout settling any tie that finishes level. The final is a single match at a neutral venue, announced in advance and rotated between host cities.
