With the international break now well behind us, the Premier League served up plenty of drama on Saturday, with late penalties, red cards, and even an unbeaten record coming to an end. Here, we'll run you through the key games from the day.
Manchester City secures victory but Ipswich gives it a scare
Manchester City continued its fine form on Saturday with a hard-fought win over Ipswich Town. The game finished 3-2 in a contest that was far more nervy than the hosts would have liked. A goal from Phil Foden and two from Erling Haaland were enough to secure the victory. However, it was Ipswich that refused to go away. Daizen Maeda canceled out Foden's opener just two minutes later, and Zian Flemming's late penalty set up a tense finish, with 12 minutes of stoppage time still to play. Despite having a third goal ruled out by VAR, Haaland still grabbed the headlines as Enzo Maresca's side made it seven wins from seven, with Maresca becoming the first manager to win his first seven Premier League games in charge of a club.
Fulham finally gets on the board
Fulham's poor start to the season finally came to an end on Saturday after a narrow 1-0 win over Hull City. The game began at a high tempo, with Fulham creating plenty of chances in the first half. Alex Iwobi's strike in the 33rd minute gave them the lead, but they struggled to make the most of their other opportunities and were left hanging on late in the game. Substitute Ryan Sessegnon was sent off in stoppage time, but Hull failed to register a single shot on target as Alvaro Arbeloa earned his first Premier League win and lifted Fulham out of the relegation zone. USMNT left back Antonee Robinson, back in the starting lineup after missing the previous game with an ankle injury, played the full 90 minutes and helped Fulham keep a shutout.
Chelsea ends Everton's unbeaten start
Chelsea picked up its first road win under Xabi Alonso, beating Everton 2-0 to end the Toffees' unbeaten start to the season. Pedro Neto struck within a minute of the restart and added a second in the 90th minute to knock the stuffing out of the hosts, who struggled to force their way back into the game. The win was overshadowed by a nasty head injury to goalkeeper Emi Martinez, who was stretchered off after a collision with Jarrad Branthwaite, but the Blues held firm for their first league shutout in 23 games.
Iraola's Liverpool sees off nine-man Brentford
Andoni Iraola's Liverpool came from behind to beat Brentford 2-1 on Saturday, handing the Bees their first loss of the season. Keane Lewis-Potter's header had given the hosts the lead, but Yehor Yarmoliuk was sent off in first-half stoppage time for a headbutt on Jérémy Jacquet. Víctor Muñoz leveled after the break before Alexander Isak, back from injury, grabbed the winner, and Vitaly Janelt's late red card left Brentford with nine men as the Spanish coach headed back to Merseyside with a smile on his face.Newcastle continues to look shaky at the back
There was more misery for Newcastle United on Saturday as Aston Villa won 1-0 at St James' Park. Johan Manzambi, who had been set to join the Magpies over the summer before Villa swooped in, headed home João Gomes' cross in the 36th minute to hand Unai Emery's side all three points, just days after its 6-0 thrashing of Fenerbahçe in the Champions League. Newcastle boss Matthias Jaissle will need to solve his side's problems quickly after back-to-back losses, including Monday's 4-1 defeat at Coventry, if he is to ease the growing pressure on his position.
Sunday's Premier League action had a bit of everything, with a derby rout on the south coast, a fierce rivalry renewed at Elland Road, and Arsenal keeping pace with Manchester City at the top. Here, we'll run you through the key games from Sunday.
Arsenal keeps pace as Madueke steals the show
Arsenal kept up the chase at the top of the table on Sunday with a hard-fought win over Nottingham Forest. The game finished 1-0 in a contest that was far tighter than the Gunners would have liked. With the game heading for a stalemate at the City Ground, it was Noni Madueke who stole the show, striking the winner ten minutes from time. Despite being far from their best, the Gunners stay within three points of Enzo Maresca's Manchester City, which made it seven wins from seven on Saturday.
Manchester United woes continue
Manchester United's poor start to the season continued on Sunday after a 1-1 tie against bitter rivals Leeds United. Bryan Mbeumo gave United the lead ten minutes before halftime, but the visitors couldn't build on their advantage, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin leveled for Leeds six minutes after the restart. Both sides pushed for a winner but struggled to make the most of their chances, leaving United still three points behind their rivals in the table. USMNT fans hoping to see Brenden Aaronson were left disappointed, as the midfielder remained an unused substitute for Leeds.
Brighton thrashes Crystal Palace in the M23 derby
Brighton continued its fine start to the season, thrashing bitter rivals Crystal Palace 5-0. An own goal from Canvot and strikes from Gomez and Ayari put the hosts three up inside ten minutes, before Kostoulas and Hinshelwood added further goals to knock the stuffing out of the Eagles, who never recovered from their nightmare start. It's the biggest home win of the Premier League season so far. It was a tough afternoon for USMNT defender Chris Richards, who started at the heart of Palace's back three but could do little to stem the tide.
