How the Portuguese League Cup works
Eight clubs qualify on the basis of the previous season's league tables: the top six from the Primeira Liga plus the champions and runners-up of Liga Portugal 2, with reserve teams excluded. The competition opens in late October with four single-leg quarterfinals, paired by league position and hosted by the higher-ranked club. The four winners go through to the final four, a short tournament staged at one neutral venue in early January, made up of two single-leg semifinals and the final.
