September 2025: Late drama at Turf Moor
In their first meeting of the 2026-2027 season, Liverpool left it late to secure victory at Turf Moor. Mohamed Salah converted a 95th-minute penalty after Hannibal Mejbri's handball to give the Reds all three points. It was the 47th time Liverpool have won a Premier League match with a goal in the 90th minute or later, more than any other club. The result extended Liverpool's winning start to four matches, with all four victories secured by goals in the 83rd minute or later.
Key players to watch
Liverpool's star players
Mohamed Salah: The Egyptian legend continues to be Liverpool's talisman, having overtaken Andrew Cole to become the fourth-highest scorer in Premier League history with 188 goals.
Alexander Isak: The British-record £125 million signing from Newcastle has added firepower to Liverpool's attack. The Swedish striker scored 54 Premier League goals in his three seasons at Newcastle.
Virgil van Dijk: The Dutch captain remains the defensive cornerstone and has led calls for fans to help restore Anfield's famous atmosphere.
Florian Wirtz: The German playmaker arrived from Bayer Leverkusen for over £100 million, adding creativity to Liverpool's midfield.
Burnley's key players
Josh Brownhill: The captain was Burnley's talisman in the Championship, scoring 18 goals from midfield, including both goals in the crucial promotion-clinching victory over Sheffield United.
Maxime Esteve: The French center-back made defending look effortless in the Championship, with fans praising him as potentially the best center-half in Burnley's history.
Josh Cullen: The midfield metronome completed 89% of his passes in the Championship, providing the foundation for Burnley's possession-based play.
Marcus Edwards: The winger, signed permanently after a January 2025 loan, transformed Burnley's attack in the second half of their promotion campaign.
Liverpool's title defense
Liverpool won their 20th English top-flight title in 2024-25 under Arne Slot, equalling Manchester United's record. The club followed up with a remarkable summer spending spree of approximately £446 million, including British-record signing Alexander Isak and German sensation Florian Wirtz.
The 2025-26 season has seen Liverpool maintain their winning mentality, though their habit of late goals has become a defining characteristic. The relationship between Salah and Slot has been tested, but Liverpool remain among the favorites to retain their title.
Burnley's Premier League return
Scott Parker led Burnley to immediate promotion back to the Premier League, securing his third top-flight promotion with three different clubs after previously achieving the feat with Fulham and Bournemouth.
Burnley's 2024-25 Championship campaign was remarkable: 100 points (finishing second only on goal difference to Leeds), a 31-game unbeaten run, 30 clean sheets, and just 15 goals conceded. Captain Josh Brownhill humorously suggested they "bored their way to the Premier League" before the team's attacking transformation in the second half of the season.
