The Big Six: Premier League’s Elite Clubs
The "Big Six" is the collective name for the top six most powerful, wealthy and historically successful clubs in the Premier League. These sides have defined English soccer, establishing themselves in title races, European rivalry and world soccer conversation for the past three decades.
Who Are the Big Six?
Manchester United – The most successful club in Premier League history, with 13 titles. Sir Alex Ferguson’s rule produced unprecedented results at Old Trafford (74,310) as United became English soccer’s global superpower.
Manchester City – Mid-table obscurity to unprecedented dominance. Since the 2008 takeover, the club has won eight titles. This includes four successive titles (2021-2024) and the legendary 2023 treble during Pep Guardiola's reign at the Etihad Stadium (53,400).
Liverpool – England's most successful club in European competition with six Champions League titles. Jürgen Klopp broke a 30-year league title drought in 2020, and the Reds won their second Premier League title in 2024/25. Anfield's atmosphere is legendary (61,276).
Arsenal – The only club to go undefeated in the Premier League (2003/04 "Invincibles"). Arsène Wenger changed everything for English soccer with three titles. Under Mikel Arteta, Arsenal returned as true contender for the title at the Emirates Stadium (60,704).
Chelsea – Roman Abramovich’s 2003 takeover turned Chelsea into perennial champions. The Blues became Premier League royalty at Stamford Bridge with a record win streak of five league titles and two Champions League titles.
Tottenham Hotspur – Spurs have no Premier League titles but they are established in the Big Six with a history of top six finishes, qualification into the Champions League, and one of the world’s most impressive stadiums. The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (62,850) is a £1 billion statement of intent.
Why Does the Big Six Matter?
Financial Dominance
These six clubs generate the highest revenues in English soccer through matchday income, broadcasting deals, commercial partnerships, and global merchandise sales. Their financial muscle allows them to attract the world's best players and managers.
The Top Four Race
With only four Champions League qualification spots available through league position, the Big Six are locked in perpetual battle. Finishing outside the top four is considered a failure – it means missing out on Europe's elite competition and approximately £100 million in revenue.
Global Fanbase
Each Big Six club has an enormous following around the world. Manchester United have more than 1.1 billion global fans. Liverpool, Arsenal, and Chelsea have enormous support across Asia, Africa, and the Americas.
Historic Rivalries
The Big Six produce the Premier League's most anticipated fixtures:
- Manchester Derby: Manchester United vs Manchester City
- North London Derby: Arsenal vs Tottenham Hotspur
- North West Derby: Liverpool vs Manchester United
- London Derbies: Chelsea vs Arsenal, Chelsea vs Tottenham
Big Six Head-to-Head: Premier League Era
| Club | PL Titles | Champions League | FA Cups (PL Era) | Top 4 Finishes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Manchester United | 13 | 2 | 7 | 25 |
| Manchester City | 8 | 1 | 3 | 14 |
| Chelsea | 5 | 2 | 6 | 21 |
| Arsenal | 3 | 0 | 9 | 24 |
| Liverpool | 2 | 2 | 2 | 19 |
| Tottenham Hotspur | 0 | 0 | 1 | 13 |
The Big Six have won 31 of 33 Premier League titles (94%). Only Blackburn Rovers (1995) and Leicester City (2016) have broken the dominance.
The Challengers: Beyond the Big Six
While the Big Six have dominated, several clubs are challenging the established order:
Newcastle United – The 2021 Saudi-backed takeover has transformed Newcastle into genuine top-four contenders. With St James' Park (52,350) rocking again and Champions League soccer returning to Tyneside, many consider Newcastle the emerging "seventh force" in English soccer.
Aston Villa – Under Unai Emery, Villa have re-established themselves as a top-half force. Champions League qualification in 2023/24 announced their return to English soccer's elite at Villa Park (42,640).
Brighton & Hove Albion – The Seagulls have punched above their weight through exceptional recruitment and coaching. European soccer at the Falmer Stadium (31,876) seemed unthinkable a decade ago.
Brentford – The Bees' data-driven approach has disrupted traditional soccer thinking. Their ability to compete with the Big Six despite limited resources makes them one of the league's most fascinating stories.
History
At the end of the 1990-1991 season, people made a proposal to establish a new league. The idea behind this proposal was to bring more money into the game of soccer. The top-flight clubs signed the Founder Members Agreement on July 17, 1991. This was the start of the Premier League as we know it. This newly formed top division is commercial independent from the Football Association and the Football League. This gives the Premier League license to negotiate its own sponsorship agreements. With this independence the English teams were expected to be able to compete with the other European clubs. The Premier League started with a main sponsor, but in the second year they reached an agreement with Carling. Carling sponsored the Premier League between 1993 and 2001. In 2001 Barclayscard took over the sponsorship. Barclays (the company name after a rebranding) ended their sponsorship in 2016. The FA announced they won't be looking for a new sponsor. The goal is to build a clean brand in line with the major sports league in the United States.
Premier League wins and trophies

Man Utd and Liverpool both have won 20 English league trophies since Liverpool won the 2024-2025 season, the most of any side in the history of the first division league. Other teams that have won the Premier League are Blackburn Rovers, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea. Champions League qualification
The numbers one till four in the final ranking on the Premier League table automatically qualify for next season's Champions League group stage. The teams finishing outside the top 4 can only qualify for the Champions League by winning the UCL or Europa League. Reaching the Champions League is basically a must for six Premier League teams. Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur. Everything less than Champions League soccer is a disaster for these teams. The battle for the top four is a very exciting one until the end of the season. Book your Premier League tickets securely online and support your team in their battle for the top 4.
Relegation
The battle for the top 4 isn't the only exciting battle in the Premier League. The tension is probably even higher at the bottom of the table. The three teams with the least points at the end of every season get relegated to the Championship. Relegation is the biggest fear for every team in the Premier League. Although there are some teams which are highly unlikely to relegate, nobody is safe in this competition. It's without a doubt that this is the worst thing to happen for every team in the Premier League. Teams in fear of relegation can use all the support you can give them. So, watch the matches of your favorite team live at the stadium. You really will enjoy the true English soccer Atmosphere.
