City stay in title hunt as Liverpool held by Chelsea
Manchester City stayed in the title hunt with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Brentford, closing the gap on Arsenal to just two points with a game still in hand. Liverpool, meanwhile, had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Chelsea despite Ryan Gravenberch's early stunner. Elsewhere, Dutch goalkeeper Robin Roefs was the hero as Sunderland held Manchester United to a goalless draw.
Liverpool 1-1 Chelsea: Gravenberch magic not enough
Liverpool missed the chance to secure their Champions League spot after being held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Chelsea at Anfield.
The hosts started brilliantly. After just five minutes, Ryan Gravenberch picked up the ball on the edge of the area and curled a magnificent strike into the far corner – his fifth league goal of the season. Jeremie Frimpong was first to congratulate his compatriot.
Arne Slot fielded a strong Dutch contingent, with Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo also starting. But Liverpool couldn't build on their early advantage.
Chelsea, who arrived having lost six consecutive league matches, found an unlikely equaliser before half-time. Enzo Fernández's free-kick was intended as a cross but sailed untouched into the net, leaving goalkeeper Frederick Woodman stranded.
Cole Palmer thought he had given Chelsea the lead early in the second half, but his goal was ruled out for offside. The match ended level – a point that does little to ease Liverpool's nerves.
It was Liverpool's second match without a win, adding to the sense that Slot's first season at Anfield has been a disappointment. They remain fourth but are not yet mathematically certain of Champions League qualification.
Manchester City 3-0 Brentford: Title race still alive
Manchester City bounced back from Monday's dramatic 3-3 draw at Everton with a comprehensive victory over Brentford at the Etihad Stadium.
Pep Guardiola's side dominated from the start but had to wait until the hour mark for the breakthrough. Jérémy Doku produced a moment of magic, curling a stunning strike into the far corner to break Brentford's resistance.
Erling Haaland extended the lead 15 minutes later, bundling home from close range in a goalmouth scramble. It was his 26th Premier League goal of the season, maintaining his position as the league's top scorer.
Omar Marmoush added gloss to the scoreline in stoppage time, completing a professional performance from City.
Title race: Arsenal back in control
Monday's 3-3 draw at Everton had seemed like a huge blow to City's title hopes. But this emphatic response keeps them in the hunt:
| Pos | Team | P | Pts | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arsenal | 35 | — | Play West Ham Sunday |
| 2 | Manchester City | 35 | — | 2 pts behind, game in hand |
Arsenal can extend their lead to five points with victory at West Ham on Sunday. But City still have their rescheduled match against Crystal Palace to come, plus two remaining matchdays.
After losing the initiative following their defeat to City last month, Arsenal now have the title back in their own hands – their first championship since 2004 is tantalisingly close.
Sunderland 0-0 Manchester United: Roefs the hero
Dutch goalkeeper Robin Roefs produced a match-saving performance as Sunderland held Manchester United to a goalless draw.
The 23-year-old former NEC keeper, who was named Sunderland's Young Player of the Season on Friday, made a crucial save in the 93rd minute. Matheus Cunha had the goal at his mercy from 12 yards, but Roefs stood firm to preserve the point.
The result all but secures third place for United, with Liverpool now only able to catch them in theory. Sunderland's survival hopes, meanwhile, are hanging by a thread.
Brian Brobbey had chances to score for Sunderland but couldn't find the net. The striker played the full 90 minutes alongside fellow Dutchman Lutsharel Geertruida. Joshua Zirkzee started for United but was substituted in the second half.
Saturday's Results
- Liverpool 1-1 Chelsea (Gravenberch 5' – Fernández)
- Sunderland 0-0 Manchester United
- Manchester City 3-0 Brentford (Doku 60', Haaland 75', Marmoush 90+')
