Great experience, everything ran smoothly, the only thing that would be nice is getting the tickets a bit earlier than on the day of the game. but it is a minor issue.

Stadium information

Name:

St. Jakob-Park

Capacity:

38,512 (37,500 all-seated for European matches)

Address:

St. Jakobs-Strasse 395, 4052 Basel, Switzerland

St. Jakob-Park Basel

Description:

The St. Jakob-Park is the biggest football stadium in Switzerland and everybody in Basel calls it the Joggeli. It opened in March 2001 with a goalless draw against Lausanne, on the site of the old ground of the same name. The stadium was designed by Herzog & de Meuron, the Basel architects who also built the Tate Modern in London and the Bird's Nest in Beijing, and it shows. For European matches the capacity comes down to 37,500 because the standing areas have to be converted to seats. The stadium holds 38,512 people for a league game, some of them can book their FC Basel tickets through our secure booking system.

Best way to travel to St. Jakob-Park

When you've booked your FC Basel tickets it's time to find out how you can get to the stadium. The club advises everybody to take public transport, and your match ticket makes that simple. It gives you free travel across the whole Northwest Switzerland tariff network on matchday. These are the options you can use to get to the Stadium.

By Tram

Tram is the way almost everybody gets to the Joggeli. Line 14 runs straight to the stop St. Jakob, which is right outside the ground. If you are arriving at Basel SBB, take tram 8, 10 or 11 to Aeschenplatz and change onto the 14 there. The whole trip takes about ten minutes and the trams run every few minutes before and after the game.

By Bus and Train

Bus line 36 and the BLT lines 37 and 47 stop at Hagnaustrasse, a short walk from the stadium. From Basel Badischer Bahnhof on the German side the 36 will bring you almost to the door in about a quarter of an hour. There is also a small station called Basel St. Jakob right next to the ground, but it only opens for events, when the railway runs a shuttle from Basel SBB that takes around five minutes.

By Car

If you come by car, take the A2 and leave at the exit Basel-St. Jakob, or come in on the H18 from the south east. There is a car park underneath the stadium and several more nearby at Leimgrube, Ruchfeld and the Messe. The club still tells you to come early, because the roads around the Joggeli fill up long before kick-off and take a while to clear afterwards.

By Bicycle

Cycling to the St. Jakob-Park is easier than you think. It is a quick and healthy way to make your journey and saves you a lot of money. Basel is one of the best cycling cities in Switzerland and the route out along the Birs is flat the whole way. On the bicycle you've got all the freedom you need. You can surpass traffic jams and avoid crowded public transport.

St. Jakob-Park guide

The St. Jakob-Park is the biggest one in the Swiss Super League. The 38,512 places are almost always sold out. That's where we come in, we've got you covered with tickets for every single FC Basel match. The stadium is divided in sectors, with A, B, C and D around the pitch and G in the tier above.

Sektor D, the Muttenzerkurve

Sektor D is home of FC Basel's most vocal supporters and it is one of the famous ends in European football. Everybody calls it the Muttenzerkurve, after the road out towards the village of Muttenz behind it. This is the place where the die-hard FC Basel fans take seat. It is a standing sector holding 4,843 people and the club asks visiting fans not to wear away colours in here. The Muttenzerkurve is known for the loudest atmosphere in the stadium and the choreographies they put on before big European nights get shown around the world. When you want to experience the real Swiss football, you need to look for Sektor D tickets.

Sektor B, the Gästesektor

On the opposite site of the Muttenzerkurve, you will find Sektor B with the blocks B0, B1 and B2. This is the away end of the St. Jakob-Park. One thing to know: Basel do not sell away tickets online. You get them through your own club or at the gate on the day. Especially when Zürich come to town, you will feel the tension and rivalry in this corner of the ground. When you book tickets for a Basel away match, this is the type of sector you end up in.

Sektor A, the Haupttribüne

Along the side of the pitch you will find Sektor A, the main stand. This stand offers the perfect sightlines across the entire pitch. For the business class experience you can take seat in the hospitality area. In the Haupttribüne it's a bit more about the luxury and a bit less about the football atmosphere. But you know for sure you will have the best view in the stadium. The dugouts are on this side as well, so you can hear the managers shouting and see the players warming-up from up close.

Sektor C

It won't be any surprise that this stand is on the opposite side of the Haupttribüne. There are also quite a lot of similarities with the main stand. You've got amazing sightlines, but will also be surrounded by a bit more quieter fans. The wheelchair spaces are in the back rows of this sector. Above it all runs Sektor G, the upper gallery that was added later and gives you the whole pitch laid out below you.

Which stand should you choose?

Not sure where to sit? We put the sectors of the St. Jakob-Park next to each other in this table. Look for what matters most to you and book your FC Basel tickets there.

Priority Best Stand Why
Best atmosphere Sektor D, the Muttenzerkurve 4,843 standing places and the big choreographies
Best view Sektor A, halfway line You look straight across the pitch
First-time visitor Sektor A or Sektor C Good view and a calmer crowd
Families with children Sektor C Seats under the roof, toilets close by
Budget-conscious Sektor G, the upper gallery The cheapest seats with a proper view
Singing & standing Sektor D A standing sector, you stand the whole match
See the players Sektor A, lower rows The dugouts and the tunnel are on this side
Premium comfort Sektor A hospitality Padded seats and lounge access

Other information

FC Basel was started by a newspaper advertisement. In November 1893 a young man called Roland Geldner put a notice in the paper asking anybody interested in football to come to a meeting, and eleven men turned up. They founded the club on 15 November 1893, most of them from the university. The red and blue came from the local rowing club, which is why the team is known as Rotblau to this day. Basel are the most successful club in the country with 21 championships, including eight in a row between 2009 and 2017, a run nobody in Switzerland had managed before.

Swiss influences

FC Basel is of course a real Swiss club, but what are the actual Swiss influences at the moment? Both of the leading men are internationals who came home. Stephan Lichtsteiner, who won league titles in Italy with Juventus and played over a hundred times for Switzerland, took over as coach in January 2026. The captain is Xherdan Shaqiri, the most famous Swiss footballer of his generation, a Champions League winner with Liverpool who came back to the club where he started and took the armband in 2025. Around them Basel keep producing players from their own academy, which has sent a long line of talent into the Bundesliga and the Premier League.

European nights

No Swiss club has done better in Europe. Basel have reached the Champions League group stage seven times, more than anybody else in the country, and got to the last sixteen on four occasions. The best remembered season is 2013-14, when they beat Manchester United 2-1 at the Joggeli and then won 2-1 at Chelsea in the group stage. They also went to the semi-finals of the Europa League in 2013 and of the Conference League in 2023.

Rivalries

Main Rivals

FC Zürich

The biggest rivalry in Swiss football is Basel against FC Zürich. It is the country's two biggest cities against each other, and it turned bitter in May 2006, when Zürich scored in the last minute of the final day at the Joggeli to take the title away from Basel. What happened on the pitch afterwards is still talked about twenty years later. The rivalry became heavier and heavier ever since and these games are policed accordingly.

Young Boys

The modern Klassiker is Basel against Young Boys. Between them these two have taken almost every championship of the last twenty years, first Basel with their eight in a row and then Bern with a run of their own. When they meet, there is usually something at the top of the table riding on it.

Minor Rivalries

Grasshopper Club Zürich

The rivalry with Grasshopper Club Zürich comes from the same place as the one with FCZ. Grasshopper were the dominant club of Swiss football for most of the twentieth century and Basel have spent the last twenty years overtaking their trophy count.
