Champions League: FC Basel 1-0 Chelsea | Arsenal 2-0 Marseille

Champions League Update

GROUP E
Basel 1-0 Chelsea FC
Steaua Bucharest 0-0 Schalke

Chelsea have made it through to the Champions League knockout stages despite losing 1-0 to unfancied Basel. The game was settled by a goal from Mohamed Salah, who impressed throughout. Salah ensured that Basel have gone ahead of German side Schalke, who could only draw in Bucharest.

Basel dominated completely, and Chelsea struggled to make any chances, seemingly happy to take a draw. The Swiss side deserved their 87th minute winner after an error from defender Ivanovic. This means that Schalke will have to beat Basel in Gelsenkirchen to progress.

GROUP F

Arsenal 2-0 Marseille
Dortmund 3-1 Napoli

Arsenal swept aside a sorry Marseille team thanks to two goals from Jack Wilshere. Goals in the 3rd minute and the 65th minute sealed the game, with an excellent assist by new signing Mesut Ozil for the second goal. The Gunners are top of the group with 12 points, but are not yet through as both Napoli and Dortmund are only three points behind.

This means that Arsenal can go out if they lose heavily in Napoli. But they would have to lose by an improbable three goals to go out. Dortmund helped their case via goals from Marco Reus, the Polish full back Jakob Blaszczykowski and Aubameyang and will feel confident of beating Marseille.
