Stadium information
Name:
Estádio dos Arcos (Estádio do Rio Ave FC)
Capacity:
5,300
Address:
Rua Dom Sancho I, 4480-876 Vila do Conde, Portugal
Description:
The Estádio dos Arcos, officially the Estádio do Rio Ave Futebol Clube, is the home of Rio Ave and has been since 1985. It sits in Vila do Conde, a coastal town just north of Porto. The ground once held around 12,815 people. In November 2020 the eastern stand was taken down for structural reasons, which dropped the capacity to roughly 5,300 today. That makes it one of the smaller grounds in the Primeira Liga. It's a tight, old-school stadium where the fans sit close to the pitch. The club is owned by Greek businessman Evangelos Marinakis, who also owns Olympiacos and Nottingham Forest. Some of those supporters can book their Rio Ave tickets through our secure booking system.
Best way to travel to Estádio dos Arcos
When you've booked your Rio Ave tickets it's time to find out how you can get to the stadium. The club advises everybody to take public transport. These are the options you can use to get to the Stadium.
By Metro
The Porto Metro is a handy way to reach Vila do Conde. The Póvoa line (Line B) runs north along the coast from Porto and stops in Vila do Conde. From the station it's a walk into town and over to the ground. The metro links the town with central Porto, so you can come up from the city with no fuss. Follow the fans and you won't get lost.
By Bus
Local buses run around Vila do Conde and connect the town with Póvoa de Varzim and the wider Porto area. The metro is the easier option coming from Porto on a matchday, but the buses cover the town and link up with the stations close to the ground.
By Car
The A28 motorway runs up the coast from Porto and is the main road to Vila do Conde. From there it's a short drive to the stadium. There is some parking around the ground and in the town, but space fills up fast on a matchday, so the club recommends public transport.
By Bicycle
Cycling to the Estádio dos Arcos is easier than you think. It is a quick and healthy way to make your journey and saves you a lot of money. The stadium is near the coast, so the ride is flat. On the bicycle you've got all the freedom you need. You can surpass traffic jams and avoid crowded public transport.
Estádio dos Arcos guide
The Estádio dos Arcos is one of the smallest grounds in Portugal. With around 5,300 seats it doesn't take much for it to feel full. That's where we come in, we've got you covered with tickets for every single Rio Ave match. The stadium is divided in four sections, the South Stand, the North Stand, the East Stand and the West Stand.
South Stand
The South Stand is home of Rio Ave's most vocal supporters. This is where the home ultras take seat. The stand is located behind one of the goals. The South Stand is known for the loudest atmosphere in the stadium. When you want to experience the real Portuguese football, you need to look for South Stand tickets. Whenever Rio Ave play towards this goal, you will get the authentic Rio Ave feeling.
North Stand
On the opposite site of the South Stand, you will find the North Stand. This stand is behind the other goal. This is also where the away fans take seat, in a corner of the North Stand. So if you're following your team to the Arcos, this is the place you need to look for. Don't forget to select the "away end" or away section when booking. The rest of the North Stand holds home fans. Especially during the big games, you will feel the tension and rivalry in the North Stand.
East Stand
Along the side of the pitch you will find the East Stand. This stand offers good sightlines across the whole pitch. The stand runs along the full length of the field. You get a clear view of the game from the side. The East Stand is a good pick for your first Rio Ave match. It's a bit more about the view and a bit less about the noise. But you know for sure you will see everything.
West Stand
It won't be any surprise that this stand is on the opposite side of the East Stand. The West Stand is the main stand. It is located on the side of the dugouts, which gives you a little bit extra. You can hear the managers shouting and see the players warming-up from up close. This stand also holds the hospitality seats, so it's a bit more about the comfort and a bit less about the football atmosphere. But you know for sure you will have a great view.
Which stand should you choose?
It's important to be able to make the best decision when booking your Rio Ave tickets. That's why we've created this table with a quick comparison about all four stands. Check what's important to you and you will find the best stand for your wishes.
| Priority | Best Stand | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Best atmosphere | South Stand Lower | Home of the ultras, where the singing starts |

| First-time visitor | East or West Stand | Balance of atmosphere and views |

Other information
Rio Ave Futebol Clube was founded on 18 January 1939 in Vila do Conde. The club is named after the Ave River, which runs through the town and into the Atlantic. Rio Ave are nicknamed "os Vila-condenses" and "os Rioavistas", and play in green and white striped shirts. The club is a real talent factory. Portuguese internationals like Fábio Coentrão, Rui Jorge and goalkeeper Quim came through here, and goalkeepers Jan Oblak and Ederson also passed through the club early in their careers. In 2023 the members approved the entry of Greek investor Evangelos Marinakis, who also owns Olympiacos and Nottingham Forest. Greek head coach Sotiris Silaidopoulos took charge in June 2025.
Portuguese influences
Rio Ave is of course a real Portuguese club, but what are the actual Portuguese influences at the moment? Under Greek ownership and a Greek head coach the squad has a real international feel, but the Portuguese roots are still there. The club's academy has a long history of producing Portuguese internationals, with names like Fábio Coentrão, Rui Jorge and Quim all starting out in Vila do Conde. Young Portuguese players keep coming through the system, and the club's identity stays tied to the town and the Ave River.

Rivalries
Main Rivals
Regional derby against Varzim
Rio Ave's closest rivalry is the regional derby with Varzim, the club from neighbouring Póvoa de Varzim just up the coast. The two towns sit side by side north of Porto, which makes this a proper local fixture. The clubs have spent recent seasons in different divisions, so the meetings have been rare, but the derby still matters to the supporters in the Vila do Conde and Póvoa area.
The bigger clubs
The trips to Porto, Benfica and Sporting
Like every smaller Primeira Liga side, Rio Ave's biggest days out are the visits to the country's "Big Three". The games against Porto, just down the road, are the closest of these and draw plenty of travelling fans. The matches against Benfica and Sporting fill the small Estádio dos Arcos too. These aren't local derbies in the classic sense, but for the home crowd they're the marquee fixtures of the season.
