The Stadio Pier Luigi Penzo opened on 7 September 1913 and is, after the Stadio Luigi Ferraris in Genoa, the second-oldest stadium in continuous use in Italy. The opening match ended in a 0-7 defeat to Genoa, an inauspicious start for a ground that has since become one of the most singular football venues in Europe. It takes its name from pilot Pier Luigi Penzo, who died during the First World War, and was renamed in his honour in 1931. The capacity has varied considerably over the club's history: from around 15,000 seats originally to about 25,000 in the 1960s, then a drastic reduction to just over 5,000 after a devastating tornado in September 1970, until the return to Serie A in 1998, when temporary stands again brought capacity up to around 13,400. Today the stadium holds around 11,150 seats. Not only its age, also its island location, right next to the Venice Biennale site, makes the Stadio Pier Luigi Penzo one of the most unusual stadiums in European football. The Curva Sud, dedicated to the late ultra Michael Groppello, is the heart of support for Venezia, six different ultras groups call it home and dress the stadium in black, orange and green. By Train
Travellers coming from abroad or further afield first reach either Venezia Santa Lucia station, right in the historic centre, or Venezia Mestre station, on the mainland. From Santa Lucia, the journey continues by vaporetto or on foot along the canals; from Mestre, it is recommended to continue by regional train to Santa Lucia and then proceed as described above. Also from Venice Marco Polo Airport, a direct bus connection serves the station area.
By Vaporetto
The public water bus, the vaporetto, is the main mode of transport in Venice and therefore also the most practical way to reach the stadium. Lines 4.1 and 5.1 take you directly to the Sant'Elena stop, from where it is only about a 5-minute walk to the Stadio Pier Luigi Penzo. On matchdays, boats run more frequently than usual, but they still fill up quickly before kick-off. Not only the short distance from the stop, also the view of the lagoon during the ride makes this trip an experience in its own right.
On Foot
Those who prefer to take their time can walk from Piazza San Marco in about 30 minutes along the Riva degli Schiavoni promenade to the stadium, passing the Venice Biennale site on the way. Vehicles are left in one of two large car parks on the edge of the historic centre, either on Tronchetto island or at Piazzale Roma, the last point connected to the mainland. From there, the journey continues not by car but by vaporetto towards Sant'Elena and the stadium. It can be a bit of stressful to find a parking spot on a big matchday, so allow enough time. The Stadio Pier Luigi Penzo is divided into four main areas: the Curva Sud, the Curva Nord, the Tribuna Centrale and the Tribuna Laterale. Club History
Venezia FC was founded on 14 December 1907 in Venice, when around twenty enthusiasts merged the football sections of two Venetian sports clubs, Società Ginnastica Marziale and Costantino Reyer. The first president was Davide Fano, and the club's very first match was played on 22 December 1907 against Vicenza, ending 1-1. Not only its old age, also its multiple refoundings due to insolvency, in 2005, 2009 and 2015, still shape the club's eventful history today.
The club's current form, "Venezia FC", was born in 2015 after the insolvency, led by American investor Joe Tacopina. During the 2009 refounding, the then-mayor Massimo Cacciari had even personally involved himself alongside the club. The greatest success in the club's history remains the 1940-41 Coppa Italia win, when Venezia first drew 3-3 in Rome in the final against AS Roma, before winning 1-0 at home, on a decisive goal from Ezio Loik. The best league finish in the club's history came a year later, in 1941-42, with 3rd place, led by the legendary attacking duo of Valentino Mazzola and Ezio Loik. Both were sold to Torino in 1942, where they won several championships with the legendary "Grande Torino", before Mazzola died in 1949 in the tragic Superga air disaster.
The 2025-26 season, under head coach Giovanni Stroppa, for whom this was already the fourth promotion of his coaching career, ended with the Serie B title: 1st place, 82 points from 38 matches, a club record for points. Promotion was mathematically secured a matchday before the end of the season, on 1 May 2026, with a 2-2 away draw at Spezia Calcio, having led 2-0, the draw was still enough for promotion. The captain throughout the title-winning season was Austrian centre-back Michael Svoboda, who later extended his contract until 2029. After promotion, American midfielder Gianluca Busio, one of the squad's key players since his club-record transfer in 2021 for around €5.7 million, received the captain's armband. This marks the club's third return to Serie A since its 2015 refounding, following two immediate relegations in 2021-22 and 2024-25, Venezia is now taking its third shot.

Venice is one of the most famous cities in the world, and Venezia FC is the lagoon city's only major football club, a club that represents not just a district, but the whole symbol of Venice. Not only football itself, also the stadium's unique island location shapes every matchday in a way that exists in no other Serie A city. The club's colours, originally black and green since 1908, were joined by orange after the merger with A.C. Mestre in 1987, and since then the club has carried the nickname "Arancioneroverdi". The club crest shows a golden winged lion, the Lion of Venice, a symbol of the whole province, often mistakenly identified as a griffin. Other club nicknames include "I Leoni Alati" (the winged lions) and "I Lagunari" (the people of the lagoon).

Famous Players
The club's record appearance maker is Gianni Grossi, with 269 matches played between 1960 and 1969, and the all-time top scorer is Francesco Pernigo, with 70 goals between 1938 and 1947, including 45 in Serie A; he also scored the decisive promotion-clinching goal in Bergamo against Atalanta in 1939. Also Filippo Maniero, the club's second-highest scorer with 54 goals, and Uruguayan Álvaro Recoba, loaned from Inter Milan in 1999 and who scored and assisted against his own parent club in the decisive 3-1 survival win in 1998-99, rank among the great names in the club's history. Not only these legends, also more recent players such as Finnish forward Joel Pohjanpalo, a former Bayer Leverkusen player, the club's fifth-highest scorer with 48 goals between 2022 and 2025 and Serie B top scorer in 2023-24 with 22 goals, as well as current captain Gianluca Busio, have secured themselves a place in the club's history.
Venezia Honours and Titles
Venezia have so far won one Coppa Italia, in the 1940-41 season with the final win over AS Roma, still the greatest success in the club's history today. Added to that is a Coppa Italia Lega Pro title, roughly the Serie C equivalent of the cup, in the 2016-17 season. On the European stage, Venezia have never yet played, a situation the club hopes to change in the long term with its renewed return to Serie A. Not only the titles themselves, also the club's best-ever league finish, 3rd place in 1941-42, show what the lagoon city was once capable of in Italian football and hopes to be capable of again after two immediate relegations. Main Rivalry
The North-East Derby against Padova
The most intense rivalry in Venezia's world is the clash with Calcio Padova, often simply called, regionally, the North-East derby. Despite its relatively recent history, it ranks among the fiercest rivalries in the region, with repeated clashes between ultras groups off the pitch as well. Not only the sporting competition, also Padova's historic opposition to the 1987 merger between Venezia and Mestre still adds to the particular animosity of this fixture today.
