Rivalries
Main Rivals
Girondins de Bordeaux
The Atlantic Derby refers to the matches between FC Nantes and Girondins de Bordeaux, two football clubs based near the Atlantic Ocean. This rivalry, which has existed since 1930, officially began in 1940 with a 3-1 victory for Nantes. Although the two cities are nearly 300 kilometers apart, this rivalry peaked in the 1980s under Claude Bez's presidency in Bordeaux. Today, although still present, this rivalry is no longer considered crucial by supporters of both teams.
Stade Rennais
Although Nantes is no longer administratively in Brittany, the match between Stade Rennais and FC Nantes is often called the Breton Derby. The rivalry between Rennes and Nantes dates back to post-war times and is fueled by the question of Nantes' belonging to Brittany. Rennes, being the current capital of Brittany, and Nantes, the largest city of the former Duchy of Brittany, have a long history of competition and rivalry.
