Rivalries

Main Rivals

AS Saint-Étienne (ASSE)

The clash between Olympique Lyonnais (OL) and AS Saint-Étienne (ASSE), commonly known as the "Derby," is one of the most intense rivalries in France. This derby, sometimes incorrectly referred to as the "Rhône Derby," is better known as the "Rhône-Alpes Derby." This match pits two neighboring cities against each other with a deep competitive history: Saint-Étienne, often perceived as a working-class city, and Lyon, seen as more bourgeois. ASSE dominated French football in the 1970s, while OL had its glory years in the 2000s. This rivalry goes beyond sports to become a true cultural and regional showdown.

Olympique de Marseille (OM)

Matches between Olympique Lyonnais (OL) and Olympique de Marseille (OM) are also highly anticipated and are often referred to as the "Olympique Clash" or more recently, the "Olympico." These clashes are marked by a strong sporting rivalry, especially since the 2000s. The first match between these prestigious clubs took place on November 11, 1951. Although the rivalry is mainly sporting, each match between these two teams generates great anticipation and passion among fans.
