Champions League round of 16
The Champions League round of 16 draw took place today and it produced some great fixtures. We cannot wait until February comes to see how these games turn out. Here is a breakdown of the matches to come.
Best fixture- Liverpool - Bayern Munich.
This was a tough one to choose from. However, ultimately, I went for Liverpool against Bayern, instead of PSG against Manchester United because of the way Liverpool are playing this season and the fact that Man United are struggling. Liverpool are on good form at the moment and based on how Bayern have been playing in the Bundesliga then, Liverpool will be happy with the draw. However, Bayern are still a very solid team and it will produce a very exciting game.
Easiest fixture- Manchester City – Schalke
Manchester City will be very happy with this draw. Schalke were lucky to be in the easiest group of the Champions League and only finished second. Based on Manchester City’s form and the fact that Schalke are currently in 13th place in the Bundesliga this should be an easy win for City.
Potential Upset- Lyon – FC Barcelona
Lyon have been very good in the Champions League this season. They beat Manchester City away and drew with them at home. Barcelona have struggled at times this season and Fekir and co. will be hoping that they will be able to cause an upset against one of the tournament favorites.
Most Underwhelming tie- Porto – Roma
All of the big teams that finished second in their group were hoping to get Porto in the draw. Roma were the “lucky” ones to be placed against them. Both teams know that this is one of the easiest routes to the quarter final and Roma will be hoping that they can have a repeat of last season and go far in the competition.
Atletico Madrid against Juventus will be an interesting game as both are in the best European defensive teams. It will be a tactical masterclass between the two teams and it will probably be decided by a marginal score line. Spurs against Dortmund will also be exciting games, the two played each other in the group stages of last years Champions League and Spurs were victorious on both occasions sending Dortmund out of the competition to the Europa League.
