Who Are the Big Six?

Ajax – The most successful club in Eredivisie history, with 36 titles. Ajax has always been a big club, but Rinus Michels' Total Football philosophy really lifted the club to a higher level. The Johan Cruijff ArenA (55,865) is named after their most famous son for a reason.

PSV Eindhoven – Always been a big club, backed by the Philips company that helped found it. They have won 26 Eredivisie titles and the European Cup in 1988. After a long wait between titles, the club roared back into contention under manager Peter Bosz.

Feyenoord – Feyenoord is a bit of a strange one. It produced many top quality players and was the first Dutch club to win the European Cup, in the same year they also lifted the World Club Cup. For a while they went without winning the Eredivisie for a long stretch. Feyenoord broke a long league title drought in 2016-17, and the club won its 15th Eredivisie title in 2022/23.

AZ Alkmaar – The reigning surprise package of the modern Eredivisie era after winning the title in 2008-09. AZ is still one of the few clubs to have gone an entire season with a title-winning campaign this century. They were really changed by manager Louis van Gaal, who turned the club into a professional Eredivisie side which punched well above its weight.

FC Twente – Another club whose history got changed completely after ambitious investment in the 2000s. Twente's 2009-10 title win, under manager Steve McClaren, remains one of the great shocks in modern Eredivisie history. The club has since worked hard to rebuild towards the top of the table.

FC Utrecht – FC Utrecht is the last one out of the big six and also the least successful in terms of titles. The Domstedelingen have never won the Eredivisie, but they remain the only club outside the traditional elite to have never been relegated from the top flight. History

At the end of the 1954-1955 season, people made a proposal to establish a new, fully professional league. The idea behind this proposal was to bring more money into the game of football. The top-flight clubs came together under the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) on 1 August 1956. This was the start of the Eredivisie as we know it. This newly formed top division remains organised under the KNVB, unlike some of its European neighbours. This gives the Eredivisie the ability to negotiate collective broadcasting agreements through Eredivisie CV. With this structure the Dutch teams were expected to be able to compete with the other European clubs, even while operating on smaller budgets. The Eredivisie started with a handful of broadcasters, but over the decades reached agreements with several major Dutch broadcasting partners.
