Fortuna Sittard was founded in 1968 in Sittard, formed through the merger of Fortuna '54 and Sittardia, making it one of the more established football clubs in Dutch football. Known affectionately as "Fortuna" by their supporters, the club has spent much of its history alternating between the Eredivisie and Eerste Divisie, but has built a loyal following in Limburg that has stuck with the club through both good times and difficult ones.
