The Stadio Olimpico, located in the Foro Italico sports complex north of Rome, has been the shared home of SS Lazio and their city rivals AS Roma since 1953. It holds 70,634 spectators across two tiers, making it the second-largest stadium in Italy behind the San Siro. Not only its size, also its wide oval shape and the old athletics track that once ran around the pitch make the Stadio Olimpico one of the most recognisable stadiums in Europe. For Lazio supporters, the Curva Nord is their own end, while the Curva Sud on the opposite side belongs to AS Roma. The stadium opened in 1953, built on the site of the former Stadio Nazionale del PNF, for the 1960 Rome Olympics, from which it takes its name. It has hosted the 1990 World Cup final and the 1996, 2009 and 2020 Champions League finals. Also the old athletics track, once a defining feature of the stadium, was removed in the late 1980s and reshaped for the 1990 World Cup, making the ground more enclosed and louder. Best Ways to Reach the Stadio Olimpico

By Train
Rome is served by two major long-distance stations, Roma Termini and Roma Tiburtina, both well connected to the rest of Italy. High-speed Frecciarossa and Italo trains bring you in from Milan, Turin, Florence or Naples in about three hours. From Roma Termini, take bus line 32 or tram 2 towards Piazza Mancini, from where the stadium is a short walk away. Also from Fiumicino Airport, the Leonardo Express gets you to Termini in about 32 minutes, from where connections to the stadium continue.
By Bus
From the city centre, ATAC bus line 32 and tram 2 serve the area around the Stadio Olimpico, with stops a few minutes' walk from the main entrances. Extra services run on matchdays, both towards the stadium before kick-off and back towards the centre after the final whistle. The ride from central Rome takes between 20 and 30 minutes depending on traffic. During the bigger Serie A matches, when the stadium is close to full, the return buses and trams tend to get very crowded right after the final whistle, so it helps to build in a little extra time for that.
By Bicycle
Rome is hillier than some cities, but a growing network of cycle paths along the Tiber makes the ride from the centre to the Stadio Olimpico doable in about 30 to 40 minutes. You will find bike racks near the Foro Italico.
By Car
Rome is well connected via the A90 ring road (Grande Raccordo Anulare) and the Lungotevere road network along the Tiber, both linked to the streets around the Foro Italico. From the city centre, the stadium is about 5 kilometres away via Viale delle Belle Arti, a trip of roughly 20 to 25 minutes outside rush hour. Those coming from Florence or Naples take the A1 straight towards the ring road and follow signs for the Foro Italico. Paid parking can be found in the areas near the stadium, and on matchdays stewards help direct traffic close to the ground. After the final whistle, leaving the area can be a bit of stressful. Not only around the stadium itself, also on the Lungotevere, traffic can stay heavy for a while after a big match. Those who arrive early tend to get the best parking spots and an easier exit once the game is over.
The Stands of the Stadio Olimpico
The Stadio Olimpico is divided into four main areas: the Curva Nord, the Curva Sud, the Tribuna Tevere and the Tribuna Monte Mario. During Lazio home matches, the Curva Nord is the club's own end, while the Curva Sud is then reserved for away supporters. You will never feel like you are watching the match from far away, whichever level you are on, since the stadium's oval shape keeps even the furthest seats reasonably close to the action. Curva Nord
The Curva Nord is Lazio's own end, the area where the famous Irriducibili ultras, the club's most passionate supporters, gather behind the goal for the full 90 minutes. It can be a bit of stressful for someone who has never experienced a curva before, all that noise so close by, but if you want to feel what Lazio truly means to this city, you will have a very special experience in the Curva Nord.
Curva Sud
On the opposite side of the pitch sits the Curva Sud, reserved for away supporters when Lazio play at home, and at the same time the club's own end for AS Roma when they host. Away fans travelling to the Stadio Olimpico for a Lazio match are placed here, generally in the upper blocks. The view from up there is high but complete, and you will see the whole pitch spread out below you. Not only the distance, also the angle from this stand is a little sharper than from the side stands, so it helps to bring good binoculars if you want to follow every detail.
Tribuna Tevere
The Tribuna Tevere, named after the nearby Tiber river, runs along one side of the pitch and includes the players' tunnel and technical areas. From here you get a side-on but clear view of the whole pitch, and this is where most of the hospitality areas and premium seats are located. Tribuna Monte Mario
Directly opposite the Tribuna Tevere sits the Tribuna Monte Mario, named after the hill overlooking the stadium, and a popular choice for families and first-time visitors. Club History
SS Lazio was founded on 9 January 1900 in Rome, much earlier than most other major Italian clubs. Not only its founding year makes Lazio unusual, also its name itself: unlike practically every other major Italian club, Lazio is named after the whole surrounding region rather than the city of Rome. Its founder, Luigi Bigiarelli, deliberately wanted to create a club representing the entire Lazio region, beyond the boundaries of the city. It took until 1973-74 for the club to celebrate its first Scudetto, led by legendary forward Giorgio Chinaglia. Also this piece of football history still shapes the club's identity today.
SS Lazio have won 2 Scudetti, in 1973-74 and 1999-2000, along with 7 Coppa Italia titles, 5 Supercoppa Italiana and the 1998-99 Cup Winners' Cup, the club's only European title, won under head coach Sven-Göran Eriksson with a 2-1 final win over RCD Mallorca. Eriksson's 1999-2000 championship side, with players such as Alessandro Nesta, Pavel Nedvěd and Hernán Crespo, is still regarded as one of the best teams in the club's history. Legendary players have worn the sky blue and white shirt across the decades: Giorgio Chinaglia in the 1970s, Alessandro Nesta as one of the best centre-backs of his generation, and more recently Ciro Immobile, who played more than a decade at the club and became its all-time top scorer.
The 2025-26 season was played under head coach Maurizio Sarri, in charge since his return on 2 June 2025. Lazio finished the league in 9th place, but had a remarkable Coppa Italia run: after wins over AC Milan in the round of 16 (1-0, on 4 December 2025) and Bologna in the quarter-finals, the club reached the final, where it lost 0-2 to Inter Milan on 13 May 2026. This is a club that, despite a mid-table league finish, gave its city an exciting spring with that Coppa Italia final. It can be a bit of stressful to lose such a tight final. At the end of the season, Sarri left the club by mutual consent to join Atalanta, and since June 2026 former Italy national team coach Gennaro Gattuso has been leading the Biancocelesti into the 2026-2027 campaign.
