Stadium information
Name:
Europa-Park Stadion
Capacity:
34,700
Address:
Schwarzwaldstraße 193, 79117 Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany
Description:
The Europa-Park Stadion opened in October 2021 and replaced the old Schwarzwald-Stadion where Freiburg had been playing for over six decades. The new ground had to be built on the other side of the city, because the old location had simply no space left to expand. With 34.700 seats it holds more than the double of the old capacity. Not only did the capacity grow so much, also the whole atmosphere in the stadium is completely different to what fans were used to. The naming rights are in hands of Europa-Park, a famous theme park close to Freiburg, which gives this ground one of the most recognisable names in German football. The stands are steep and the design is compact. You are always sitting very close to the pitch, and when you visit the Europa-Park Stadion for the first time, you will feel immediately how special this place is.
Best way to travel to Europa-Park Stadion
When you’ve booked your SC Freiburg tickets it’s time to find out how you can get to the stadium. Freiburg is one of the best-connected cities in the southwest of Germany. You can reach it from Switzerland, France and most German cities very easily by train. The club advises everybody to use public transport. These are the options you have to get to the Europa-Park Stadion.
By Tram
The most convenient way to reach the Europa-Park Stadion from the city centre is by tram. Take line 1 from Hauptbahnhof in direction of Littenweiler and get off at the Europa-Park Stadion stop. This stop is sitting directly next to the stadium, so you really can not miss it. The journey takes around 20 minutes from the centre and trams are running very frequent on matchdays. Not only is this the fastest option from the centre, also it is the most ecological one, which fits perfectly with Freiburg’s reputation as one of the greenest cities in Germany. Also you will find already a lot of SC Freiburg fans on the tram from the moment you board at Hauptbahnhof.
By Train
Freiburg Hauptbahnhof is one of the most well-connected stations in the southwest of Germany. From Frankfurt, Stuttgart and Basel there are direct ICE and IC trains running throughout the whole day. From Basel it is only around 45 minutes by train, which makes Freiburg also very easy to reach from Switzerland. From Strasbourg in France you can get to Freiburg in under one hour when you take the TGV in direction of Offenburg and then connect south. On matchdays you will find extra trains on the schedule and a very international mix of supporters arriving from different countries at the station. From Hauptbahnhof you take the tram as described above.
By Bus
Regional bus lines connect the Black Forest towns and villages around Freiburg to the city. When you are staying somewhere in the region and want to get to the match, the combination of bus to the main station and then tram is the most reliable option you have got. Also the bus network in this part of Germany is very well maintained and you can really count on the connections being punctual. On matchdays there are extra services added to handle the higher amount of passengers. Check with the local transport authority RVF for the exact connections from your location.
By Bicycle
Freiburg is known as the cycling capital of Germany. The city has more bicycles per person than almost anywhere else in the country and the network of cycle paths is excellent. From the city centre the Europa-Park Stadion is reachable by bicycle in around 20 minutes. On the bicycle you’ve got all the freedom you need. Before and after the match you can cycle through the whole city without waiting for any public transport. Also you will find large bicycle parking areas directly around the ground, so you don’t have to worry about where to leave your bike.
Europa-Park Stadion guide
The Europa-Park Stadion has four stands with very steep terraces that bring you extremely close to the pitch. The 34.700 seats are spread between the Nordtribüne, the Südtribüne, the Haupttribüne and the Gegentribüne.
Nordtribüne (North Stand)
The Nordtribüne is the home of SC Freiburg’s most passionate supporters. This is where you will find the ultras and the most fanatic home fans, with the active supporter section in the lower tier. The steep design means the noise from the Nordtribüne goes nowhere, it stays inside and travels to every other stand very quickly. When Freiburg score a goal, you will feel the Nordtribüne take the entire stadium along with them. Also this stand is where the singing starts, and it barely stops until the referee blows the final whistle. If you want to experience the real SC Freiburg, you need to take seat in the Nordtribüne.
Südtribüne (South Stand)
On the opposite site of the Nordtribüne, you will find the Südtribüne. Also this stand has strong home support in the main sections, with the away fans placed in a clearly separated block in the upper part of the stand. The away section is well sized and gives visiting supporters a very good view of the whole pitch. The Südtribüne is slightly more affordable than the side stands, and you will get a very good experience here whether you are a Freiburg supporter or a visiting fan. During the bigger European nights, you will feel the compact design of the Europa-Park Stadion most clearly from the Südtribüne.
Haupttribüne (Main Stand / West)
Along the west side of the pitch you will find the Haupttribüne. This is the main stand of the Europa-Park Stadion with the press section, the VIP areas and the corporate hospitality. For the premium experience you can take seat in the business seats on the upper levels of the Haupttribüne. In the Haupttribüne you will have the best sightlines in the whole stadium, with a very clear view along the full length of the pitch. It is a bit more about the comfort here and a bit less about the loudest atmosphere, but you will still feel the noise from the Nordtribüne across the pitch on a matchday.
Gegentribüne (East Stand)
On the opposite site of the Haupttribüne, you will find the Gegentribüne. Also this stand gives you very good sightlines along the full length of the pitch. It is more affordable than the Haupttribüne and very popular with regular supporters who want a reliable view at a fair price. From the Gegentribüne you will have the best possible overview of the full Europa-Park Stadion, with both the Nordtribüne and the Südtribüne clearly visible across the pitch. Also this is a very good first choice for people who visit Freiburg for the first time.
Which stand should you choose?
It’s important to be able to make the best decision when booking your SC Freiburg tickets. That’s why we’ve created this table with a quick comparison about all four stands. Check what’s important to you and you will find the best stand for your wishes.
| Priority | Best Stand | Why |

| Best atmosphere | Nordtribüne Lower | Active ultras section, loudest part of the stadium |

Club history
Sport-Club Freiburg was founded on 30 May 1904 in the city of Freiburg im Breisgau, a university city between the Black Forest and the Rhine, right on the border with France and Switzerland. For the most part of the twentieth century the club was active in the lower divisions of German football. This changed in the early 1990s when Freiburg made it to the Bundesliga for the first time in 1993. Under coach Volker Finke, who stayed at the club for an extraordinary 16 years until 2007, Freiburg built itself a very strong reputation for developing young players and playing attractive football on a budget that most other Bundesliga clubs would never accept. Not only did the club simply survive in the top flight, also they regularly finished in the upper part of the Bundesliga table, which was something that almost nobody had expected from a city this size. The tradition of doing more with less continued under Christian Streich, who became head coach in December 2011 and went on to become one of the most respected managers in all of German football history. In his 13 seasons at SC Freiburg, Streich turned the club into a side that was capable of qualifying for European competition almost every single year. He left Freiburg in the summer of 2024 as a genuine legend. The club then appointed Julian Schuster, a former Freiburg player himself, as the new head coach for the 2024-25 season. Schuster led the club to a 5th place finish in the Bundesliga and a place in the Europa League. The biggest moment of the old Schwarzwald-Stadion era was the DFB-Pokal final on 21 May 2022, when SC Freiburg played in a German Cup final for the first time ever and lost 2–4 to RB Leipzig at the Olympiastadion in Berlin. Then came the moment that changed everything for the club. On 20 May 2026, SC Freiburg played the Europa League Final in Istanbul against Aston Villa, only the second time in the club’s history they had reached a major European final. They lost 0–3 on the night, but nobody in Freiburg will ever forget the journey that brought them there.
German influences
SC Freiburg has always had a very strong German identity. The club is deeply rooted in the community of Freiburg and the surrounding Breisgau region of the state of Baden-Württemberg. Not only does the academy at SC Freiburg produce players for the club itself, also several of their graduates have gone on to play for the German national team. Nico Schlötterbeck came through the Freiburg youth system before going on to play for Germany at international level. Also Christian Günter, who is both the club captain and the all-time record appearance holder for SC Freiburg with over 450 matches for the club, is a product of this same development philosophy. The Italian international Vincenzo Grifo has been one of the most consistent performers in the Bundesliga for many years and is very closely associated with this version of the club. The Breisgau-Brasilianer, as the club is nicknamed, always play with a style and an intensity that reflects the character of the city they come from.

Rivalries
Main Rivals
Baden-Württemberg Derby against VfB Stuttgart
The match between SC Freiburg and VfB Stuttgart is the most important regional derby for supporters of both clubs. Both teams come from the state of Baden-Württemberg and the history between them goes back many decades. Stuttgart consider themselves the bigger and more successful club, while Freiburg supporters are very proud of the fact that their club has built and maintained its Bundesliga status through smart development and very good coaching rather than through big spending. Whenever the two clubs meet, you will find a very motivated atmosphere on both sides and the fixture always carries extra importance in the Bundesliga calendar.
Minor Rivalries
Rivalry with TSG Hoffenheim
The rivalry with TSG Hoffenheim has a clear ideological side to it that goes beyond the sporting competition. SC Freiburg are seen as a community-built club with a democratic and sustainable model, while Hoffenheim are associated with the financial backing of a single wealthy individual. Also both clubs come from Baden-Württemberg, which gives the fixture extra local meaning. Not only do they compete on the pitch, also they often compete for the same positions in the Bundesliga table and for the same European qualification places.
Rivalry with Karlsruher SC
The rivalry with Karlsruher SC is one of the oldest in Baden football. When both clubs were playing in the same division in the lower leagues, this was one of the most fiercely contested derbies in the whole region. Karlsruher SC have spent time outside the Bundesliga in recent years, but the memory of those encounters is still strong and the fixture always carries extra meaning whenever the two clubs meet in the same competition.
