Middlesbrough were reinstated and now face Hull City for promotion to the Premier League.

The road to Wembley
Both finalists earned their spot in dramatic fashion. Hull City got past Millwall over two legs to secure their place. Middlesbrough were initially eliminated by Southampton in a 2-1 aggregate defeat after extra time, but following the disciplinary commission's ruling on Spygate, Boro were reinstated directly into the final. Southampton, who had been the form team of the four play-off contenders, were expelled from the play-offs and additionally hit with a four-point deduction for the 2026/27 Championship season.
